Choosing the Best Location for Your Home Office

Your home office may be your primary workplace if you work at home or it may be just an area at home to do extra work from your job at. Whatever you use your home office for, the location of it plays a vital part in how well you will work there and what kind of work you may produce there. A home office should be some place where distractions are minimal. If you work at home, finding the perfect location for you home office can determine if your successful or not at your work at home endeavor. Here are some pros and cons of some locations you may consider having your home office at.

Basement
The basement is a good option for a home office since it is quiet and isolated away from the rest of the house. The problem with the basement is that it may be too isolated or cold and dark. Also, you aren't aware of what is going on in the rest of the house or even what the weather is like outside. The basement may give you cabin fever when you work at home.

Guest Bedroom
Your guest bedroom is any extra bedroom that you may have in your house. When you don't have guest, the home office is all yours. Plus you can put more storage and organization in the room since it is not being used on a daily basis. The downside is that if you have any guests in your house, you can't work while they are there. Plus if you work where there is a bed, you may be tempted to take a snooze instead of working.

Your Bedroom
If you live in an apartment or a small condo, you may have no choice but to make your bedroom into your home office so you can work at home. Having your home office in your bedroom is one of the last places that you should consider putting it. It's hard to fall asleep at night when you are staring at your work. It may also interrupt your spouse's sleep schedule also. Lastly, unless you have a huge bedroom, the space is very limited since the home office will be competing with your bed and other furniture like dressers.

Living Room
If you have a bigger living room, you may be able to section off a part of it for your home office. This gives you the advantage of having space and also being able to keep an eye on what is going on. That is also a con of having your home office in the living room. There are too many distractions and you may not be able to concentrate properly to work. Unless you work when no one else in the house is home, then you may want to consider another place or really try to section off the work at home space with portable walls.

Kitchen
If you have children to watch while you are working at home, this may be an option for you. You can get the basic business stuff done and still keep a watch on your children. Then when your children are not around you can have a quiet place to work. Having your home office in the kitchen will lead to the most distractions. Count how many times a person walks into the kitchen during a day. You will have no privacy and you can forget about making phone calls to clients from this space.

Everyone is different and what works for one person's home office may not work for the next person.
