Choosing the Best Pregnancy Test

Kathy Wiehl
Wondering if you are pregnant can be exciting, nerve-wracking and in some situations, kind of scary. Store bought pregnancy tests can offer reassurance, but even if the test is negative, you may worry about the possibility of a false negative. This can occur very early in the pregnancy when the amount of pregnancy hormone in your body (HCG) is too low to be detected by the test. Taking the test too early can result in a false negative but some tests are designed to test for very low levels of HCG. How can you tell which is the best pregnancy test?

Several brands of tests claim to detect a level of 20 MiU/ML, but many of these are not available in stores. They can be purchased online, so if you know you'll need pregnancy tests in the near future you may want to order from SaveOnTest.com, Early-Pregnancy-Tests.com or AtHomePregnancyTests.com. These tests are basic stick pregnancy tests at very low prices, so if you can order ahead it's a good idea to get a few. Many women feel that these online stores offer the best pregnancy test.

If you need a test today and plan on shopping at Walmart, CVS or any other pharmacy, you need to know which brand is the best pregnancy test to detect low levels of HCG. The following brands claim to detect levels as low as 25 MiU/ML.
ClearBlue Easy Digital
ClearBlue Easy Earliest Result
Confirm 1-Step
CVS brand midstream tests

Equate (sold at Walmart)

The above mentioned pregnancy tests may be a little costly due to the higher level of sensitivity. If you have already missed your period by a few days or more and have begun feeling the effects of pregnancy, tests that detect 50 MiU/ml of HCG should give you accurate results. Nearly all other brands detect this level of HCG.

Depending on where you are in your cycle, the best pregnancy test for you may not be the same as others, although the lower the HCG level that the test can detect, the more likely you are to get an accurate result. If you get a positive result, you can assume that you are pregnant since HCG does not exist in our bodies unless we are pregnant or have a very rare medical condition.

  • Many pregnancy tests can be taken before you miss your period.
  • Some pregnancy tests aren't as accurate until your HCG level reaches a certain point.
