Choosing the Best Toy for Your Child

Look Beyond Age and Gender

Dan Reveal
Like so many other ventures which have to do with child development and the feelings of children, choosing the best toy for your child revolves, quite predictably, around the factors of age and gender.

Still, thoughts about what the toy will be used for, how it will be enjoyed, can also enter into the discussion.

As you choose the best toy for your child, you may ask whether the toy will serve an educational purpose, for example, or will it be used in the carefree fun of play activity.

In either case, choosing the best toy for your child is a venture which benefits from following simple rules.

Educational Toys

If the toy you choose for your child is to be an educational one, it is important to know what is meant by educational.

Flash cards are a good example of an educational toy. How quickly can your child give the correct answer to a multiplication problem, for example? In this sense, choosing the best toy for your child means that the child can enjoy the toy while still learning something.

What simple rules might you follow in the example of choosing an educational toy?

For one thing it is important to know what mental level of development your child is in. What good would it do to give your child of 4 years old an educational toy that is meant for much older children?

Choosing the best toy for your child means that you will try to avoid the frustration a child will feel because they can't understand the toys' purpose.

Alternatively, is the best educational toy the one which your child can easily master? What brings out the best in your child? Do they prefer colorful toys or challenging ones?

Fun Toys

Although educational toys can be enjoyable, fun toys are defined more clearly as those meant as a carefree distraction, a way to pass the time in a happy way.

There are many obvious examples of fun toys which you can choose for your child, and, as in choosing the best educational toys, you can be guided by simple rules.

For one thing, if you would have liked to play with the toy as a child, it is likely that your own child will have fun with it also. People generally don't change when it comes to their experiences of having fun.

Also, when choosing a fun toy for your child, take the time to understand why your child might want to build a certain collection of a particular toy.

Do they want to collect Hot Wheels toy cars because their friends do? In choosing the best fun toy for your child, then, you might simply have to look at the friends your child has and what their own toys are.

Parental Influence

Obviously, in choosing the best toy for your child, you have the advantage of seeing what might be best for the child in the long run.

Toys that are associated with music, for example, are educational and fun at the same time. Bicycles promote coordination. Puzzles aid in fine motor skills.

In sum, choosing the best toy for your child is inevitably going to involve factors of age and gender. How the toys will be used, however, whether for educational or fun purposes, is something to think about as well.

My favorites as a child were those I could put my imagination into. They seemed idle by themselves, but my imagination could breathe life into them...Thanks for all your comments.
