Perhaps the biggest problem for full figure ladies when looking for a wedding dress is that the styles rarely exist above a certain size, usually around 16 to 18. This wouldn't be such an issue, if you normally wore a size 10 to 12, but the majority of women today wear something between a size 14 and 20 dress. Now, take into account that most wedding dresses are about two to three sizes smaller than what a normal dress size is one can see a definite problem starting to form.
Of course, there are places where the larger ladies can shop, but unfortunately the wedding dresses found at these places often treat the ample curves of a woman's body as something to hide underneath a tent of white taffeta and silk, or even yards and yards of lace. Unless your fiancée fell in love with you while you were wearing a tent, chances are he fell in love with every curve of your body. Why hide them on the day you are declaring your love for him?
Instead, try and search for a dress that will accentuate what you and your fiancée love about your body, and minimize the portions that you might not want to highlight. For most women, a wedding dress with an A-line structure is great for slimming down the stomach and hip areas, while highlighting the breast and chest areas.
One of the major mistakes that plus-sized ladies make when searching for a wedding dress is that they don't take into account the flexibility that a good tailor can give them in choosing a dress. Have you found a style or dress that you have fell in love with, and simply can't find in the right size? Chances are if you can find a size or two larger than you need, a good tailor can make the alterations necessary to make the dress truly your own. Be sure to bring your favorite tailor into the process early on. There is a great chance that you'll be using his services throughout the entire time.
Unfortunately, however, there are certain times when you simply cannot find a wedding dress that comes even remotely close to fitting. Have a little bit of hope and faith, though, because again the tailor can be of service. If you have a particular style of wedding dress in mind, and you can find a pattern for it, a reputable tailor or seamstress would be more than happy to create your wedding dress for you. In addition, the cost of the wedding dress could potentially be much less than those you find in the stores.
As any former bride will tell you, a major part of making the wedding dress look the best is choosing the correct undergarments. While some consider such things as a corset or slimming shape wear as a necessity on your wedding, day, use them wisely. Many times the bride is seen as breathless through the reception simply because she is having trouble breathing because of the undergarments that she is wearing. If you're not used to sandwiching your organs and lungs into an unnatural shape, chances are a corset will be more trouble than it's worth.
Above all, remember to choose a wedding dress to accentuate what you love about your body, choose your undergarments wisely, and make friends with a quality tailor or seamstress early in your search for a wedding dress. And remember, this is your day; you'll be beautiful no matter what you wear.
