Choosing Between Artificial and Live Plants for Room Decor

Jamie Cortez
Linda is rather confused right now. She wanted to decorate her living room and wanted to put some plants in it. However, with kids and pets roaming around she is not so sure about placing live plants in the living room. She loves living plants because they can add "soul" to the room but now she is seriously thinking about getting plastics instead.

Linda is not the only person confused over choosing live or artificial plants when decorating the house. Both have their own merits and choosing one over the other may not be such a trivial task.

The followings are some points to consider when posed with this problem.

Artificial plants

The biggest benefit of an artificial plant is that you don't need to worry about water, sunlight, fertilizer, temperature, etc. As plastic plants don't need any of that the only thing you need to do for them is to make sure they are free of dust. A simple wave of a duster every morning should be enough to make your artificial plants look healthy.

Another benefit of artificial plant is that they already look good to begin with and they stay that way for a long time. No need to wait for the flowers to bloom and no need to worry about leaves getting dry. They are always in their prime.

The next benefit is that you can always get the plastic plant that you want regardless of the weather. It doesn't matter if it's in a middle of a blazing winter. If you want a fully grown hibiscus in your living room you can get exactly that.

Live plants

Real plants are nice. They can add life to any room and since they grow you can watch them changing their forms and colors day by day. Living plants do come at a cost though. To keep them in shape means you need to give them enough sunlight.

The best place for an indoor live plant is right next to the window where sunlight is abundant. Then you need to make sure the plants get enough water. Different plants have different needs. Some like it very wet and others just need a drip or two. If you want your plants to grow well you have to know these specifics.

Conclusion

If you want to take the easy way then artificial plants are the way to go. They require much less maintenance than live plants. As long as you don't let them gather dust they will add a nice touch to any room. But if you love a little challenge and don't have kids or pets that love to kick your pot plants around you could try live plants. After all, a living plant is always livelier than a plastic.
