The first and foremost item to consider is the price. A used RV camper will definitely cost less than a new one. In addition, a new RV camper will depreciate quite quickly over the first two years that you own it. It is very possible that you could purchase an RV camper that is two years old and save 30 to 40 percent over a new model. If you purchase a travel trailer that is two years old, you will probably save about 20 to 25 percent. Both are rather large sums when considering which type to purchase.
One of the drawbacks of purchasing a used RV camper or travel trailer is that you will not have the choices you have when you are purchasing new models. You cannot pick out your own floor plans, accessories or color schemes. If you have particular requirements it may take a while to find a used RV camper that will fill most, if not all, of those needs. But, if you are careful and patient, you can find the one you want for the price you can afford.
Another drawback is that you will have to live with the amount of maintenance the previous owner did or did not perform. You may have to replace some accessories or do some repairs on the RV camper. When you are shopping, it is best to do an close inspection. Then you can decide if the amount of repair you will have to do is worth the lower price. If you are looking at motorized RV campers, you should ask to look at the engine. You might also ask if you can have a mechanic you trust look over the motor and other parts. If you know of an RV technician, you might want to ask them to have a look, as well. Be sure to at least look yourself. It can be very disheartening to take your RV camper on your first trip and have a major malfunction that has to be repaired.
A motorized RV camper will depreciate at a much faster rate than one that is towable. This is due to the wear and tear on the engine. If the motor is diesel, you can expect to get more miles from the engine. It will also hold value a bit better than if the RV camper has a gasoline engine.
When considering whether to buy a new or used RV, you have to decide if the wear and tear on the vehicle is worth the money you will save. If not and you can afford it, buy a new one. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to purchase a brand new RV camper. Hopefully, these tips will help you make the decision in an informed manner.
