So what exactly does a video game tester do and how does this job work? Well, you may have heard of something called beta testing, or even done some yourself. This would be a good place to start to get your feet wet, although there are some differences between beta testing and being a game tester. With a beta test, you are usually given the game at a lower price or for free and you test out of your home. As a true video game tester, you will most likely be required to go to work every day. There are positions for testing out of your home, but this will only be on a part-time level and not what would be considered a career. You must remember that this job is not just for anybody. The majority of jobs are going to go to the individuals with experience on multiple gaming consoles, although this doesn't completely rule out those with less experience.
A few other things you will need to compete in this field is a lot of patience. You are testing games with flaws so you will have to be able to control yourself even when the faults require you to reboot the system for the umpteenth time. The key here is to have a love for gaming as well as a passion for how it works and being a part of the experience. If you don't love the games, you will never last. Another attribute your future employers will be looking for is the ability to write clear and concise reports. Every flaw you find has to be recorded in detail so that it can be explored and fixed. Writing ability is key here.
The world of gaming can be exciting. Just be sure you understand that any job requires work to succeed.
