Choosing Cleats, What Should You Look For?

To many people, soccer cleats are all the same. However, if you play it smart, the right pair of cleats can take your play to a whole new level. They can give you an incredible edge by shaving seconds off your reaction time while adding stylistic flair to your uniform.

Ground shoes. If you don't know which cleat to buy or you will be playing on multiple surfaces -- high school is usually like this -- then this is what you're looking for. If it is your kids who you are shopping for, or this is your first go at the league games, you will want something comfortable, lightweight and durable. Be sure to get a pair with comfortable soles because after a few hours of play, you're definitely going to notice the difference.

Turf shoes. These are necessary for players who will be battling on Astroturf. They have been skillfully crafted to defeat its bounce with smaller cleats, multiple cleat sizes and variable spacing to deliver maneuverability. Instead of the average ground cleat, which is composed of 1.5-2 inch cleats, here optimal ball feel and fit is delivered through a quick grip shoe, created to give people more control on the man-made turf. If you are looking for extra comfort, find a pair with an EVA insole, EVA midsole and a good heel insert. These features ensure your foot's security, even as they improve your speed. But be careful -- never judge a cleat until you try it on. They can print EVA midsole on the box, but if you don't feel like you are floating on air, leave it. You will feel the holes of the cleats digging into your feet later on.

Training shoes. These are created specifically for the men and women determined to succeed by playing in the rain, sleet or snow. Built with thick soles and light gripping, these shoes are designed for indoor soccer or light training sessions on a hard surface. These shoes are fantastic in that they offer traction, a snug fit and superior ball control.

Now get out there and tear up the turf!
