Choosing a College Major

Brian Timmon
One of the toughest decisions to be made when talking about college is choosing a major. Many people believe that choosing a college is the toughest part however this process could be even tougher. In this article I will explain the best ways to go about choosing a major and what the best majors are for certain types of people.

Science Major- This type of major requires good math skills and logical thinking. It is also very time consuming as it will require a lot of time in the lab. Most labs are 1-2 hours long although there are some that are longer. Bio majors could go into anything such as the Medical field, nutrition or working with animals. Chemistry majors could become pharmacists or work as doctors. Physics majors could do anything from engineering to working for NASA. Chemistry majors will also spend hours in the lab and have to be extra careful when dealing with harmful chemicals.

Liberal Arts - A liberal arts major is really for someone who doesn't know what they want to do in college. Some colleges call this an exploratory major which allows people to check out a bunch of different majors before they make a decision on what they want to do.

Business Major- This major requires you to be good with money and have people skills. If you are passionate about an idea you could take entrapanurial classes to gain knowledge of running a business on your own however this can be very difficult. There are great job opportunities in business such as accountants, financial analysts and portfolio managers. All of these require being good with numbers but not necessarily being a math major.

Psychology Major- Psychology is an interesting subject to take if you like helping people and if you are fascinated by the human mind. Most of the time psychology majors go on to graduate school to receive their Phd. This is where most of the money is however you can use psychology to lead you towards other professions if you don't necessarily want to attend graduate school.

These are the four main types of majors which will help you succeed in college. Keep in mind you don't have to choose a major until the end of your sophomore year for most schools however some might require choosing one earlier or later.
