Choosing a Daycare for Your Infant

Finding the Perfect Daycare Environment for Your Baby

As a parent, you want your young child to have the best daycare; settling for second best is not an option. Different ages have different needs. The right daycare environment for a toddler is not necessarily right for your baby. Here are some guidelines to follow to find a daycare setting that is tailor made for your baby's needs.

CAREGIVER-CHILD RATION: In a national study of optimal childcare situations, it was concluded that one caregiver should not look after more than three children who are one year of age or younger. This 1:3 ratio, however, is not a law or regulation (as of yet), so ask the daycare facility what their caregiver-child ratio is.

ENVIRONMENT: Most babies thrive best in a daycare setting that is predictable and structured. A regular routine will make your baby feel at ease. Equally important in your baby's daycare environment is the quality. The daycare facility should be safe for your baby to play in.

At the same time, it needs to provide the stimulation necessary to promote learning and physical activity that increases as your baby grows. And with all this stimulation there must also be a healthy amount of down time. An environment with a schedule that is too strict will likely cause your baby unneeded discomfort. Choose a daycare that allows your baby to follow his or her own sleeping and eating schedule.

COMMUNICATION: Good daycare providers will keep you connected to your baby's day. Whether it is in the form of a daily journal or through regular conversations with the provider, information about your baby's day should be communicated to you.

CARE: A baby needs a great amount of care. The daycare provider should be a staple in your baby's life. The emotional health and welfare of your baby is dependent on the bonding he or she is able to make with the daycare provider.

Having several different daycare providers each week is not best for your baby's well-being and sense of security. Plenty of affection and patience from the childcare worker will go a long way in helping your baby quickly adjust to those hours without you.

Your search for a decent daycare for your baby doesn't have to feel like you're trying to find a needle in a haystack. Using the aforementioned guidelines to find your baby's daycare will give you peace of mind, knowing that your precious little one is safe and happy while you're away.
