Choosing Gifts for Babies and Toddlers

Figuring out which baby and toddler gifts and toys to buy can be very confusing, especially if you don't have children of your own. What toys are suitable for boys and girls of different ages? What do you buy for Christmas, birthdays or holidays? Fortunately, with internet shopping the choices are made much easier.

First, who is the present for? Is it for a boy of a girl? Although at this age kids may like similar toys, parents sometimes have expectations which you should try to respect. How old is the child? Gifts for babies are usually bought to make life easier for the parents than for the child to baby to use. Some gift ideas for babies are:

-Diaper bags. They may seems boring, but they're very very practical. And many websites now sell fashionable and attractive diaper bags as well. Be sure to consider how big the bag is and how much it will hold. Parents expecting twins are likely to need a bigger bag, as are parents who already have children and might need to carry around items for them too.

-Baby clothes and blankets. Babies are messy, and new parents can never have enough basic baby clothes or blankets. Basics like singlets or romper suits which can be thrown into a washing machine are what you'll want. Especially if it's their first baby, in which case they can keep the clothes for later kids.

For toddlers your choices become a bit broader. Consider what the boy or girl likes to do. Are they active, and rough and tumble, or are they a quieter thoughtful child, who might enjoy different kinds of toys? Of course, be sure to check what age groups the website you're looking at recommends each toy is suited for: usually age ranges should be followed, so that they toy is safe and suitable for the child.

-Music boxes are a lovely gift for a quieter child, although they are likely to drive the parents batty if they are loud and tinny and the kids take a liking to it! Don't let this put you off, just be careful about who you give one to. Disney in particular make wonderful music boxes which are very popular.

-Rocking horses and playhouses. Both these toys are quite large, and correspondingly expensive, but as a gift for a birthday or Christmas they will give the toddler hours of fun and memories. Do be sure that there is space for it before you buy one as a gift though, because they do take up a lot of room. If there is the space they can be a godsend for parents, whose little angels will occupy themselves for hours galloping into the sunset, or creating stories in the playhouse, leaving mom or dad to some well deserved rest!

-Red wagons or tricycles. Toys that move are perennially popular with children. Giving them a way of moving around by themselves can encourage a child to exercise, keeping them healthy and forming good habits. Again, make sure there is the room for a wagon or tricycle at the child's home, and that their parents are happy for them to play outside on one. The red wagon conjures up images of an ideal American childhood, full of make believe adventures and outdoor play, and the tricycle can help improve a child's motor skills, with steering, and also their balance, before they're ready to graduate to a real bicycle.

The only real trick to choosing a great present for a baby or toddler is making sure you think about which child you're buying it for, and the parents as well. Buy something which is high quality for safety and to make sure it lasts, and you can't go wrong!
