Choosing an Islamic Fashion Style

Traditional Vs Modern Islamic Fashion Style

Write Right
When I first converted to Islam, I was told what I could and could not wear by many of the women in the community. Some told me colors, such as brown and black, were best to wear so not to draw attention to myself. For some odd reason, I was told I could not wear the color white. For some women who convert to Islam, finding clothing to suit your needs can sometimes be daunting and advice from other Muslim women can either be misleading or just not for you.

Muslim women come from many different backgrounds so the styles of a Muslim woman can change from each region. Traditional Muslim women typically wear regional clothings. In some places, women are accustom to wearing the abaya and jilbabs while in other regions salwar and tunics are worn. I have worn the abaya several times before. Though, there are many different designs and are really lovely to wear, it is not an outfit for daily wear for me. I tend to dress modest, yet western.

There are Muslim women who prefer to wear more modern, yet modest clothings. It is rather easy to wear and it fits professional lifestyles of most Muslims who prefer to work outside of the home. Modern styles tend to lean more towards jeans, skirts, and a nice top that are not too tight, sheer or revealing.

Finding modest clothings is not hard at all. You can search google.com or yahoo.com for traditional Islamic clothing using keywords, such as "Abaya" or "Jelbab" or modern clothing by searching for "Modern Islamic clothing". Many modern clothing can be found in local clothing stores also. Buying locally gives you the opportunity to try on different outfits to see if they are modest enough and if they suit your style.

One important thing to remember is to never give up your comfort for something that is stylish. Some Muslim women tend to take it a bit overboard by wearing clothing that makes them too hot or extremely uncomfortable, such as wearing tight shoes or tight scarves for the sake of being fashionable.

The clothes that you choose to wear depends on your style and taste.
