Choosing a Marriage Counselor

Richard Banks
Family marriage counseling is a treatment options available for working through anger, depression and other issues suffered by a family. Some families choose to seek out professional help after a family loss or difficult situation like job loss. Family marriage counseling can be obtained through a local mental health center or church, depending on personal preference. Therapy may involve individual care or group care.

Counseling for one person is difficult, two is intense, and for an entire family, possible insanity. The first step is realizing there is a need for family marriage counseling. The second step involves understanding the therapy. The final portion of family marriage counseling involves bring the family together and forming a cohesive unit.

Tip #1: Is there a need?

A family consists of many different dynamics and personalities. Human nature allows for similarities and differences, but when family's relationships become counterproductive, a problem will arise. The signs may not always be crystal clear. There beginning of problems may start with arguments of perceived small concerns, then grow to the uncontrollable. The issues will then be pieced together with other arguments and eventually be a problem for a professional.

Tip #2: What is family marriage counseling?

The words family and marriage have long been considered different, but in fact have basic similarities. Values used by professionals consistently revolve around teaching the family model, treating the problems and not the person, looking deeper into the root of the family concerns, and ethical behavior for all parties involved.

Family marriage counseling is thought of as an intervention between the parties to break down any existing relationship concerns. The goal would then be to focus on mental or emotional concerns within the family and society in general.

Tip #3: Coming together

The final stage of the process of family marriage counseling is to have a cohesive family unit; a unit which will be productive members of society without barriers. At the end of the counseling sessions, a family will be able to successfully answer yes to the following three questions. Within the marriage/partnership, is there a continued courtship? Do we as families look forward and not backward? Are the marriage/partnership and the family the priority?

Family marriage counseling isn't easy, but the rewards are great. At the end of the day, the family unit is stronger.
