Choosing an Online Business Degree: What's Right for You?

Earning a business degree online allows you to continue your current job while preparing for the future. Online courses meet asynchronously, allowing you to attend classes when and where you please without being tied down to the strict schedule of traditional college classes. For the business student this means advancing their skill level while working another full-time job.

According to eLearners.com, 43 percent of colleges and universities that offer business degree programs in the traditional setting also offer online Business programs. The type of business degree seek depends on your individual goals and needs. Although business degrees are varied and tailored to specific interests and goals, they can be divided into two basic groups.

Undergraduate Degrees

An Associate's Degree in business provides the basics needed to pursue a Bachelor's Degree or advanced degree. Some entry-level positions-particularly in small organizations accept an associate's degree in business. Most will expect you to pursue a Bachelor's Degree. An Associate's Degree typically requires 2 years of classes in the traditional setting, but may be completed in as little as a year in an online business degree program.

A Bachelor's Degree in business prepares you for entry-level positions in a range of organizations. Typically, employees with a bachelors' degree in business have demonstrated their ability to understand a range of topics, achieve long-term goals, meet deadlines and get the job done. Employees with bachelor's degree provide added credentials for the company enhancing its credibility and image. Many companies provide or subsidize education for employees.

Graduate Degrees

Many online universities offer a master's degree in business. These include a MA Degree (Master of Arts) a MS Degree (Master of Science) or an MBA Degree (Master of Business Administration). Other specialized degrees include MIS Degree (Master of Information Systems).

Graduate degrees are typically required for leadership positions in large organizations. There is a critical need for graduate degrees for businesses that operate in national or global markets.

Master's degrees are generally available in advertising and public relations, communications technology, human resource management, information systems management and other Leadership and administration fields.

Earning a business degree online takes commitment and planning as the coursework is rigorous, but flexible scheduling makes it possible to arrange class time that is convenient for your schedule. Holding a business degree opens doors to new opportunities and job prospects.

    Good point Mike. From my experience with online courses, interaction is required and your grade depends on the quality and quantity of your interactions with classmates and the professor. Perhaps some online colleges do not have these requirements?
