Choosing an Online College: The Degree Aspect

Antoinette McGowan
If you are looking at online colleges then chances are that you already have a career path in mind. Now all you have to do is find a college that will help you reach your goals and get started in the profession of your choice. However, not all colleges are created equal and for that reason there are things that you need to look at before choosing an online college.

One part to look at is whether or not the college that you wish to go to offers the degree program that you want and need. When I started looking into going to college I wanted to earn my degree in criminal justice. I looked at several colleges and some of those colleges did not offer a criminal justice degree program. The ones that did offer the criminal justice program did not offer an Associate's Degree program. What this meant for me was that I could not attend those online schools until I had first obtained my Associate's Degree at a different school first. For me I did not want to bounce around schools to get each degree. So I found a school that offered the Criminal Justice degree all the way through to the Master's level. So this is one aspect that you will need to look at.

Secondly how long will it take you to obtain each degree? In a traditional brick and mortar school it takes 2 years to obtain an Associate's Degree, 2 more years to obtain a Bachelor's Degree and then an additional 2 years to obtain a Master's Degree. This adds up to 6 years from start to finish to receive your Master's Degree. The school I am going to it has taken me 13 months to obtain my Associate's Degree. I am going into my Bachelor's Degree program and this will take me 13 months to obtain. For me I could not handle being in school for 4 years to just get my Bachelor's Degree because mostly to be honest I am impatient. So having the option to obtain my Bachelor's Degree in 2 years and 2 months is a great assurance that I will be able to stick with it and graduate. So weight how you personally can handle being in college and look for a school that offers you the time frame that fits with what you can do.

Thirdly how many classes does the degree program require you to take at one time? In a traditional brick and mortar college most students go full time with 8 classes each semester. This is way too much for me with my hectic schedule and trying to be an active part of my children's lives. Some online colleges require you to take a specific number of classes at a time. I looked into one school that required me to take six classes at a time and this was still too much for me. The school I choose requires me to take 2 classes every 5 and a half weeks and after the 5 and a half week mark I get 2 new classes. Keeping up with 2 classes works for me as I can keep up with college and my kids. So look for the required amount of classes and look at your own personal needs and this will help you find the online college that is a great fit for you.
