Choosing the Perfect Family Pet

Robin Stone
Spring is here, and so is all other signs of life. It was a long winter and you are finally thinking about getting a pet for your family that your child has been wanting all winter long. So, what do you do? You start looking the local newspaper for pets for sale. How do you choose the perfect pet? Well, the first thing that you have to figure out is how much free time you and your family are going to have that can be spent with a pet.

Pets Need Special Care

As you probably already know by now, no matter what pet you decide to choose, you are going to need to put time and effort into caring for it. If you and your family members are constantly on the go with busy schedules, then you will have to think about who is going to be there in order to take care of a pet. This is something that you are going to need to point out to your family members before you pick a pet out. No matter what pet you decide that you want, one of your family members is going to need to be there at all times in order to take care of your pet.

Which Pet Suits Your Care Level?

While your child may have always wanted a puppy, chances are that you might not have enough time to take care of a dog. If this is the case, chances are that you might want to consider a different type of pet. Maybe a kitten would be more suitable for you, as they tend to much more independent than dogs. Instead of you having to walk your dog constantly, all that a cat will require of you is to change their litter box. Other smaller animals, such as rabbits or guinea pigs tend to require less care than a dog also. Of course, this does not mean that you should neglect any pet which you decide to choose.

Post-Decision

The decision has been made, and you have decided that you want a pet dog (or cat). Now, one of the main things that you will need to think about is where you will get your dog from. You begin to look through the local newspapers. You see an ad for a free dog to go to a good home. Although the dog is seven years of age, the ad states that it is good with kids. The best option is for you to not consider this, for one reason and one reason only. Your children, and you yourself, will get attached to the dog. Since the dog is already up in age, chances are that it already may have health issues or it may experience them in the near future. When the dog passes away, your children will be heartbroken and you will be in the same position as you are right now - looking for a pet.

So where do you look next? The first idea that will come to mind is to go a local pet shop or breeder. It is important to make sure that you do not take your child to the pet shop the first time that you visit it. Chances are that you will end up walking out with the first puppy that you see, even though it might not be exactly what you had in mind. Determining what types of dog breeds, as well as the dog size that you have in mind, is something that you should think about beforehand.

You also might want to check out the local ASPCA or a local rescue group, as there are many dogs who could use a good home. Since there will be various breeds and mixed breeds to choose from which need rescuing, you might end up finding a puppy that will make a wonderful addition to your family.

Understand That it is a Big Decision

If you do not already realize it, the most important thing is for you to realize that deciding to get a pet is a big decision. It is not one that you should decide to take lightly. Much thought needs to be put into choosing the perfect pet beforehand. As a family, you should work as a democracy when it comes to selecting the animal which will make the best addition to your household.
