A rabbit hutch has legs which usually elevate it off the ground. This protects the rabbits from predators since rabbits left on the ground are prone to be over turned by dogs or larger animals allowing them to get to the rabbit and kill it. Rabbits have been known to die from fright and just the experience of this can take away the family pet even if the larger animal cannot get to the rabbit itself. Make sure to properly secure the rabbit hutch in order to prevent this from occurring. The size of the rabbit will be a key factor in determining how big a rabbit hutch needs to be.
A rabbit needs enough room to move around and stretch out in the hutch. Rabbits can be litter trained allowing some owners to give their rabbits free run of the house. If the rabbits only spends night time in the hutch this can also help determine the size of the hutch an owner should purchase. Rabbits that are left out of a cage or hutch without supervision have a tendency to chew things and get into trouble so all rabbits should have a hutch they can be safely placed into when the owner is unable to provide supervision.
The rabbit hutch needs to be large enough to hold necessary items such as a water bowl or bottle, food dish, toys, and bunny board. The wire bottom of the hutch/cage can hurt the rabbit's feet and should be covered by a bunny board. The board provides a place for the rabbit to sit on and is made of particle board or thick cardboard. Rabbit hutches must be kept clean at all times. Rabbits are very clean animals that constantly lick and clean themselves. The type of rabbit hutch considered best has a removable pan underneath that catches droppings which fall below allowing the hutch to be easily cleaned. This is important because the rabbit's urine has a very strong odor. By lining the pan with newspaper and placing shredded paper on top, the owner can help ease the effort of cleaning the rabbit hutch. The pan can be washed with liquid soap and hosed off.
Rabbit hutches make ideal homes for pet rabbits. Hutches can provide a pet rabbit a safe environment to call home. They come in a variety of sizes and should be large enough for the rabbit to comfortably move around and stretch out. A rabbit hutch can be kept inside or out is properly secured to prevent larger animals from tipping it over and possibly harming the rabbit. Soft and adorable, rabbits make terrific family pets and with proper care and housing can live healthy, happy lives with their owners.
