Choosing the Perfect Scotch Whisky

All Scotch is Not Created Equal

Angie Mohr CA CMA
There is probably no other liquor on the planet that causes more argument, debate, fake Scottish accents, or pretentious ramblings than Scotch whisky. While there are many types and styles of whisky distilled around the world, Scotch comes from Scotland. To be able to be called Scotch, the whisky must have been distilled or aged within the borders of Scotland.

Choosing a scotch for your bar or a gift can be daunting. Not only are there hundreds of brands, there are five distinct types of Scotch: single malt, single grain, blended malt, blended grain and blended. When discussing the perfect Scotch, single malt should be your focus. Single malt Scotch is made from nothing but malted barley and water at a single distillery. All other types of Scotch are blends of ingredients or different batches or types of Scotch.

There are laws governing Scotch in Scotland in regards to ingredients, purity and aging. Scotch must be aged for a minimum of three years. The longer a Scotch is barrel aged, the more character it picks up from the oak and the smoother it gets. Longer aged Scotch will disclose this on the label.

Here are some of the most famous single malt Scotch brands in different price categories.

The Macallan

This historic Scotch is aged in sherry and bourbon casks for anywhere from 10 to 30 years. If you are looking for one of the best single malts out there and have some money to spend, this is the one. The longer aged the Scotch is, the more expensive it will be. You can get a bottle of 10 year The Macallan for around $40 in the U.S.

The Glenlivet

This Scotch comes from one of the oldest continually-producing distillers in Scotland. It is one of the most popular brands of single malt and is a staple of restaurants and upscale bars. The Glenlivet is made with local well water which gives it a distinct character. Ages range from 12-25 years old. A bottle of 12 year will set you back about $25 whereas the 25 year is around $350.

Glenfiddich

Glenfiddich is also a popular single malt in the United States. It is easily recognizable in its three sided triangular bottle. If you are looking for quality Scotch on a budget, Glenfiddich is a good choice. It is available in ages from 12-40 years. A 12 year bottle is around $25 and a 40 year is approximately $2,000.

Aberfeldy

Aberfeldy is not as well known in the U.S. as the above brands. The distillery started in the late 1800s and is now owned by Bacardi. It is only available in 12 and 21 year ages and costs from $35- $200.

Very interesting stuff, Angie. I just got my first lesson about scotch, so the timing is interesting. I learned there are also some main regions each with distinctive flavors: Islay, Speyside, Highland, Lowland and Campbeltown. Interesting how the different products from the regions have similar characteristics.
