Choosing a Pet and a Hunting Companion

Donna Sager
When choosing a hunting companion you are also choosing a pet. You are choosing a dog that will become part of your family as well as your lifestyle. You want to make sure that you choose the right breed. There are many types of hunting dogs. Some of the types are retrievers, pointers, spaniels, setters, and hound dogs. While there are many types there are also many breeds for each type. After choosing the type of hunting dog you want, you then need to research the breeds in that category. Make sure that the breed you choose not only fits your hunting companion needs, but also your lifestyle. You should not opt to choose a type of dog that will not be suitable for your home life also.

Retriever breeds include but are not limited to Labradors, Nova Scotia's, flat coated, Chesapeake Bay, curly-coated, and golden. Retrievers love water. They will retrieve shot birds and upland game. They are able to withstand harsh weather conditions and physical hazards. They have dense coats that allow them to repel water. They are a highly trainable breed. The Golden and Labradors are the most common type of family dog. They are friendly and reliable. They are excellent with children, and can adapt well to most situations. Before choosing a retriever make sure to research all breeds to make sure they are best suited also to your lifestyle, and not just your duck hunting.

Pointer breeds include but are not limited to Spinone Italiano, Weimaraner, Pointer, Griffon, Brittany, German Shorthair and Vizsla. The pointer can seek out game very quickly. They then freeze into position pointing at the target hence the name pointer. They are a very dedicated breed, and can hunt upland game easily. Some pointer breeds can work well on land or in water. They are great family dogs, with their commitment and loyalty. They are well mannered, even tempered, and intelligent. They can live well with other animals including other dogs and cats. They are also good with children, and very obedient. Once again do your research on each breed before making a decision.

Spaniels are the smallest type of hunting dog. They are intelligent, affectionate, and obedient. Some of the breeds included are Baykin, Irish Water, Welsh Springer, English Springer, Cocker, and English Cocker. These dogs were originally used for hunting upland game birds. They are also sometimes used for hunting rabbits and waterfowl, and are well suited for all terrain. The spaniels are an easily trainable breed and make a wonderful family companion. Still always remember to do your research on the various breeds before choosing your dog.

Choosing a hunting companion is not necessarily as easy as it may seem when you first decide to get one. It takes time, research, patience, and a lot of thought to be able to find just the right one for you. The dog that may be best suited for your friend or your hunting partner may not necessarily be best suited for you and your family. Do your research, especially if you have children or live in the city. A hunting dog needs a lot of exercise and a city life may not be the best choice for the larger breeds. Learning about the breeds before you make a decision will prove to be in the best interest for you, your family, and your new pet/hunting companion/family member.
