Choosing a Pet That's Right for You: Preparing for a Major Life Commitment

Susan Brown
"How do I know what is the right pet for me?"

Too many times in the past, people have basically pushed cute little puppies on their friends and family, only for that person to find they no longer want or can care for the now-grown dog. What can be done?

Of course you want to make sure you have the type of funds it would take to care for a pet, as well as the proper environment and even emotional makeup to have such a responsibility on your hands. You are going to be solely responsible for everything about your pet, and just like a child you can't just give up on or give the pet away after you've discovered it doesn't "work for you".

It's important to choose the right pet for you or for your recipient, and so you need to consider your personality closely. Basically, you and your pet need to have the same type of personality to make it jive and work! This is a commitment, friends, and so which are you from the following list?

Are you a . . .

City Slicker? That is, are you always on the go . . . even when it comes to your meals? Are you more into a tiny place, low-key, low-maintenace, because basically you're never around? Then what you may need is a furry friend who can join you on all your city adventures. It will need to be small and tame, perhaps small enough to fit in one of those cute doggy bags or tame enough to take on a leash and not be all over everybody. Could be a little dog, ferret, or perhaps you could even consider leaving the pet at home in which it would need to be something that requires little attention like a fish or even a gecko!

Couch Potato? What you need is a tube partner. It may be a laid-back cat who can just lay next to you while the two of you cruise the television channels looking for your next great adventure there.

Athlete? You may want to have a companion who is just as athletic as you, like a large dog such as a Labrador. The larger dogs are better for athletic people, even if they're just the type of people who like to go for a morning run because they can take the big dog along with them and it can keep up.

Traveler? You're never around the house anyway, so your pet would have to be one that can easily accompany you like a fun little dog such as a poodle or Chihuahua. These days, dogs are also airline-friendly, and so that may be your best bet!

People Person? That is, is your house always full of people coming in and out? Do you love to have people over to your house every single weekend or more? Then what you need is basically whatever you choose! You are the perfect owner to many types of pets whether that be canine, feline, reptile, or whatever you choose! You're around the feed it, play with it, and so forth, and you love for your guests to enjoy your little buddy as well.
