Choosing Prescription Eyewear Correctly: When More Than One Pair of Glasses is Needed

Prescription Eyewear

After wearing glasses for almost twenty years, I found the correct way to choose prescription eyewear. Start with the first step for choosing prescription eyewear and choosing frames for prescription eyewear before deciding if more than one pair of glasses is needed.

How to Choose Prescription Eyewear

There are several considerations before making prescription eyewear purchases. One pair of glasses can't do everything.

Prescription Eyewear Sunglasses

Even if your prescription eyewear glasses are photochromic, it's helpful to have sunglasses for the car. The windshield blocks UV rays that darken lenses. So a pair of prescription eyewear sunglasses is helpful when driving. Consider prescription eyewear sunglasses if:

1) you take medications that make you sensitive to sunlight
2) if you are outside around water or snow a lot
3) if you drive a great deal

Since prescription eyewear sunglasses shield eyes from sunlight, consider ordering them.

Prescription Eyewear Safety Eyeglasses and Sport Eyeglasses

Safety glasses are another consideration for prescription eyewear. If needed, you probably wouldn't wear them when off the job. Specialized sports glasses are invaluable when playing sports but again, when not playing sports, you might not wear them. A second pair of prescription eyewear is beneficial in both cases.

Breaking or Losing Prescription Eyewear

Another reason for extra pairs of prescription eyewear is if you break or lose your first pair. Nothing is worse than needing your prescription eyewear and not having them. If you are practically blind without your glasses, then another pair of prescription eyewear is recommended.

Prescription Eyewear for Contact Wearers

People who wear contacts should have a pair of prescription eyewear in case of infection or other conditions that interfere while wearing contacts. A lot of people who wear contacts make the mistake of not having a back up pair of prescription eyewear.

Computer Prescription Eyewear

If you spend time in front of the computer, a progressive pair of prescription eyewear provides intermediate viewing but may not work for long term computer use. Bifocals with intermediate and near prescription may work better. Or you may choose single vision prescription eyewear with intermediate distance for computers.
