Before looking for a relocation service, decide if you really need one. If you are moving within state or to a place you know well, the cost may not be worth the help you recieve. If you are moving internationally, however, it is almost guaranteed that you will need help. Get a firm that specializes in these types of moves that can walk you through all of the steps and timing difficulties of an overseas move.
If you are moving within the United States, a relocation service can usually move you quicker than other professionals. They should also help you with more than moving your things; they should be able to find you a rental and help get basics such as utilities turned on.
Corporate offices often offer, or at least recommend, relocation services. Find out if you are offered a discount for choosing a specific company. If you are changing jobs, find out if your new company will consider covering at least part of the cost. Keep in mind that these things are normally negotiated along with the salary and any type of signing bonus.
It is best to meet with the company as soon as you know you need their services. Come with a detailed list of questions concerning your needs during a move. Some things a relocation service should help you with, but other things you may have to do yourself. If you are unsure how to go about doing something, like expediting a passport, feel free to ask the company. Most will have a list of trusted companies to which they refer clients.
You should also get a quote for their services. In the case of your belongings, find out what type of movers the company will hire and if you need to purchase additional insurance for your things. Also ask who you can talk to if you have a problem. Will you be assigned a specific person to help with your move or will you be directed to whoever is in the office?
As with any service, ask for several references. Call each person and ask about their move and the satisfaction they had with the company. You should try to compare similar distance moves in getting an accurate portrayal of how the company works. Also ask if anything unforeseen happened during the move and how the company handled the challenge.
A relocation service can seem like an unnecessary splurge, but it can save you a lot of time and stress. If you are unsure whether a relocation service is right for you, you can always arrange for a consultation. This could be your opportunity to move to a place as well rested and serene as when you left your old home.
