Draw Out a Plan
This will be your first step and your main guide to getting started on planning your families yard. look around your yard, step back and to the sides. Now, where does your yard need improvement or color? After you have got a real good look and an idea of what you may want, draw it out on a piece of paper. This plan will go with you to the store, when you get to that step. The plan will help you throughout the whole process of improving your yard. Be sure to write labels on this plan of were you want each flower and what kind you might want in certain spots. Also make sure you map out were the sun hits and were there is more shade, this will be important to your flowers and other plants!
Study Up
Looking on the Internet or in books for different flowers and there needs, will benefit you a lot. Check for perennial or annual.( Perennial being plants that come back each year and annual being ones that will not.) Look for the different needs of the plant, how much it needs plant food, sun or shade, does it attract butterflies or hummingbirds for the little ones? Knowing all of these needs will be good to know before you get started and for future reference.
Go Shopping
One of my favorite parts when its time to shop for new plants and flowers, is bringing the kids! I feel this is one good area that they will be able to help and enjoy. It is really fun for them as it is for me also! Don't forget your plan it will help you get everything you need. Such as pruners, soil, a new water bucket or spray nozzle(if needed), plant food, yard gloves, seeds, and any other flowers or plants you choose. If you want a extra new look to your yard, add borders. To make flower beds or just beautiful borders. One great way to help fix up the yard for you and your family!
Start the Transformation
I would suggest that you start in one area first. Rake the area well and then work the dirt (adding a bit of all purpose soil throughout the dirt as you work it.) Then arrange each flower before planting, stand back to see if you like were it is. If not, then fix it to where you like it most. When you get it right, to you and your family's liking , plant it together. Follow the directions to each plant every time, very important!
Now its time for you to admire your family's work. I hope this guide can get you started in the right direction for your spring planting. My recommendations for flowers would be a wildflower mix that is both annual and perennial. It attracts butterfly's and hummingbirds. I found it at K Mart, but I am pretty sure you can find it at a lot of other stores. Attracting those two spring creatures , is my children's favorite part and probably your children's too!
