Choosing the Right Gift Card for Any Occasion

Malcolm Tatum
Gifts cards are great options when you need to purchase gifts for Christmas, birthdays, and other gift-giving occasions. Since there are so many different types of gift cards offered today, it can sometimes be confusing when it comes to choosing the right card for each person on your list.

If you want to give gift cards but are intimidated by all the selections, here are some tips on how to choose the perfect card every time.

Step 1

Consider the shopping habits of the recipient. Maybe he or she enjoys shopping at discount retail stores where the range of merchandise is wide and varied. Maybe your loved one prefers to make purchases in stores that focus on a particular type of products. Understanding how the people on your list shop will help you eliminate options that are definitely not a good fit.

Step 2

Think food instead of merchandise. We all know people who already have closets and other storage areas overflowing with things they bought "just in case we ever need them".

Providing them one more way to empower that inner packrat may not be the best idea. Instead, choose a gift card to a restaurant the recipient is sure to use. They get a free night out and you have the satisfaction of knowing you didn't add to the clutter.

Step 3

Identify any needs as well as wants that a gift card could address. Chances are at least one or two people on your list are currently going through rough economic times. Instead of a gift card to a department store or a restaurant, why not go with a gift card that can be used anywhere, including the grocery store? That way, the recipient is free to use the card to buy food or pay a utility bill, with no one being the wiser.

Step 4

Choose gift cards that can be used at stores and other locations that are within a convenient distance. In an era when people are becoming more aware of the need to conserve energy, many are choosing to shop closer to home rather than drive across town. Buy a gift card that can be used at retail outlets, restaurants, or supermarkets that are near the recipient's home.

Tips and Warnings

Be aware of any physical limitations that the recipient may have. A gift card to a store across town may not be a good option if the individual has trouble walking or is currently bedridden.

Opt for a card that can be used to make online purchases. The recipient can have fun shopping online and not have to deal with long lines at the store or be stuck in traffic.
