Choosing the Right Holiday Wines

Mike Burnside
Choosing the right wine to go with that holiday meal can be difficult. Holiday meals can usually mean a large and diverse crowd with an even more varied menu. The traditional fare being served can often have clashing flavors. But it doesn't have to be as difficult as you might expect. By following some of these suggestions, you can make your holiday meal a memorable one.

When asked, many experts will tell you that a good wine to begin serving before the meal is Champagne. It's a great wine to start the palate anticipating more great flavors to come. While serving appetizers whether it is fruit and cheese or shrimp cocktails Champagne is always a great start. If you prefer, try a sparkling Chenin Blanc with its slight sweetness to balance out the spiciness of some holiday foods.

A popular red wine that many enjoy during the holidays is the Pinot Noir. Some of the best Pinot Noirs come from wineries in the French Burgundy region. On the other hand, if you are looking locally, Oregon produces some excellent vintages. The Pinot Noir tends to bring out the earthy flavors of the stuffing. You will find that it is a very versatile wine for your holiday entertaining.

When choosing a wine, many people concentrate on the pairings with the turkey. Though the turkey is the centerpiece to your holiday meal, it is not where you will find the stronger flavors. The sweet potatoes, collard greens or even the ham hock will be better paired with another excellent red wine, a Zinfandel. You will find the Zinfandel is also a very versatile wine that holds up well with the spicy aromas of your holiday feast.

However, there is another group of people who believe that a white wine is what will bring out the flavors of the turkey. A Riesling is a good choice for them. The Riesling has a kind of acidity that helps to cut through the sweetness of the potatoes and the richness of your gravy. It is also great to pour when introducing people who may not be accustomed to drinking wine.

When choosing wine for your holiday meal, a good bet is to have a variety available. Have a few different bottles opened and give your guests the opportunity to pair their wine choices throughout the evening. Wine snobs or not, your guests will appreciate the opportunity and your holiday meal will be a success.

Very nice choice. I am a bit of a snob as well but will be gracious when the occassion dictates it...

Well Mike, I can be a bit of a wine snob. I always ask exactly what wines are being served at a party before I'll take a glass. So many bad bottles of vinegar out there - LOL!

I've been liking Prosecco with holiday meals for a few years now.
