First off, you need to look beyond Yahoo!, Google, and EZ-Board. All of those websites contain great communities, but it can be confusing to determine just how active they are. You might just be better off locating a website dedicated to your interests that has its own forum, or advertises its own forum maintained on Yahoo!, Google, or EZ-Board. No matter how you look at it, you will have to take your forum search beyond the big hitters.
That leads into the next thing you need to know when conducting a forum search: Do your research. If you do a little research before you choose an on-line community, you will be richly rewarded. By doing research, you should be able to determine the popularity of the community, its viewpoint, and other on-line communities that pertain to the same interests. You should also be able to tell how often it is used. If you are looking for just basic information, you might not care how active the forum is. However, it you are looking for continued support and want to actively participate on a weekly or even daily basis, you will want to be sure to join a very active community.
When conducting a forum search, some people get caught up in finding the perfect one. That isn't necessary. You can always move. As a result, prepared to leave if you find something better. There is nothing keeping you in an on-line community that no longer serves your interests. As you become more savvy researching all of the on-line communities peaking your interests, you will probably come across one that it is easier to use, provides you with more information, and includes amongst its ranks experts in the subject area. There is nothing wrong with going for greener pastures.
Speaking of greener pastures, keep in mind that some communities are more welcoming than others while you are conducting your forum search. Some communities welcome just about everyone, and others are very specific as to whom they would like to see amongst their ranks. If you see several messages welcoming new members, you will likely be welcomed with open arms. As a newbie to the forum, you are likely to need a lot of help and guidance.
Unfortunately, sometimes just beginning a forum search can be daunting. Your problem isn't that you can't find the right forum, it is that you don't even know what to search for in the first place. If you are unsure as to which communities you'd like to join, simply take a few minutes to think about your favorite interests, past-times, or even obstacles you wish to overcome. For example, if you are looking for support in your effort to stop smoking, joining an on-line community can allow you to connect with others going through the same process. There is a forum for just about anything these days, even the most embarrassing issues. You never have to use your real name.
In addition, when conducting a search for a new forum, you will need to consider how much time do you plan to contribute to the community. Some exclusive on-line communities set minimum participation requirements as a condition of membership. Before you join such a community, be sure that you are willing to contribute to the forum in a way that will at least meet those minimum requirements. Most forums wish to avoid members who always just scan what is being said without actually contributing to the discussion. You don't need to contribute much, but do try to contribute something. If you wish to scan, hold off on joining the forum.
That having been said, consider whether you'd like to be an active or passive member. There is nothing wrong with becoming a passive member. A passive member will still contribute to the forum, just not as often or in depth as other contributors. An active member, however, will work hard to become one of the leading members of the forum. It is a good idea to decide which you'd like to be or become before you even sign up for membership. As stated above, some forums don't look kindly upon passive members and do not cater to them.
In conducting a forum search, you will also need to take into consideration whether you'd like to join a community that supports your point of view or one that will challenge your beliefs. Most forums take firm stances on their subject matter, and some are downright political. You will need to do your research in order to determine this before you join. Once you've discovered a few different candidates, i.e. forums you are thinking about joining, you will have to think about what type of community you'd like to join. Some communities will challenge your point of view, and you may be called to defend it frequently. Others include members that share your beliefs. You need to think about your comfort level before you join. Some people thrive on controversy.
When conducting a new forum search, it is important to realize that you can join several on-line communities that pertain to the same subject. In most cases, there are several forums that pertain to a particular topic. You might like the people who contribute to one, while another offers more in-depth information. You don't have to choose between the two. You can join both and contribute to each. Some people love to join every forum under the sun that pertains to their interests and needs. You might find that this becomes confusing. If you want to keep your on-line life simple, stick to just a few forums that you find most informative, friendly, and interesting.
Even after all of the research, you still might not find what you are looking for in a forum. If after extensive you can't find an on-line community for your interests, you can always start one. You might be looking for a highly specialized community that doesn't yet exist. If that is the case, you can start your own forum. It isn't very difficult. The hardest part is gaining new members and publicizing your new forum. Staring the actual group can be as simple as starting a new group on Yahoo! or a similar website. You will then have to go out of your way to publicize it on your website and recruit members. It might not be ideal, buy you and you alone will be able to set the tone of the discussion.
As you can see, performing a forum search for the right on-line community for you is more complex than simply searching for your interests in the Google, Yahoo!, or EZ-Board communities. By taking a little time, you can find the forum or forums that are right for you, or start a bran new one catering to your specific interests. By keeping things simple, you can save yourself a lot of hassle in the long run.
