Choosing the Right Makeup Foundation

Charlotte Kuchinsky
Finding the right makeup foundation can be frustrating. That is especially true for those who suffer from problem, sensitive or aging skin. Those conditions present a unique set of issues with which the average female is not faced.

With hundreds of different brands, types, and colors of foundation on the market today, women are often overwhelmed with the sheer number of options. Does one choose liquid or cream; cake or stick; powder or mineral?

Unfortunately, those answers are not simple. There is a lot that needs to be considered in choosing the perfect foundation. These include skin type, texture and condition as well as color and undertones. It also hinges on where the woman lives, works and plays. Finally, it depends on what she wants to achieve with her makeup.

Over the course of a few articles we will deal with the various aspects of foundation choice. Let's begin with the skin type, texture, and condition.

Tinted moisturizers

Most women can wear some type of liquid or cream foundation, although the consistency and color of both will vary greatly from woman to woman. Women with dry skin will find this foundation type definitely works best for them because if smoothes on easily to give them the perfect, flawless canvas they desire.

Most women can wear either of these although the consistency and color of both will vary greatly from woman to woman. Women with dry skin will find this foundation type definitely works best for them because if smoothes on easily to give them the perfect, flawless canvas they desire.

Mousses

Mousse foundations are great for aging or delicate skin because they are light and airy. They don't easily settle into wrinkles and fine lines. They are also great for women who want minimal coverage because they aren't heavy or cakey.

Cake and stick foundations

These aren't particularly good for delicate or aging skin. They tend to be harsh and settle in all the wrong place, making skin look older and unhealthy. On the other hand, younger women with normal to oily skin can wear these types of foundations although they may not be the best choice. For the most part heavy sticks and cake foundations should be left only to those women who require their type of maximum coverage.

Powder foundation

This type of foundation works best on women with oily skin because they help to absorb the oil and give the face a smooth, flawless appearance. However, women with dry skin will find that powders can look scaly or flaky. Instead, they should look for foundations that contain hydrating properties or moisturizers. Women of all skin types, tones, and textures can generally wear a mineral foundation. However, some may find that using these foundations wet, rather than dry, will work best for them. This is also a good foundation choice for women with combination skin because it will absorb excess oil without further drying out the rest of the skin.

Women with sensitive or problem-ridden skin have the most difficulty finding the right foundation type. For them, it is important to look for foundations that were specifically made for their specific skin issue. Key words and phrases to look for in foundation labeling include allergy tested, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, oil-free and safe for sensitive skin.

Even taking all of that into consideration, a few women may find they cannot wear foundation of any kind. They have a condition that is most often referred to as hypersensitivity. Anyone who falls within this category should seek the assistance of a dermatologist before using any type of skin care product or cosmetic on their skin.

In future articles we'll explore how skin color and tone, along with environment, plays an important role in choosing a foundation. We'll also discuss the primary goals that women have in mind when wearing foundation; which ones are reasonable and doable and those that are not.

I start off with a tinted moisturiser that comes with some SPF protection, followed by a cream foundation to help even out my skin tone and I then apply some powder.

Great information. I never wear foundation, so I'll have to refer to this when it comes time to use it eventually!
