Choosing the Right Paint Color for a Nursery

Amy Stepp
Trying to decide on a color or theme for a baby's nursery can be overwhelming; however it will be one of the easiest decisions to make if you just sit back, and let your mind think like a little child's. At birth until the age of one month babies only can see the colors red and black, and they won't be able to really see all major colors until a year old. With that in mind, you basically can paint a room and decorate it to your preference. Here are some guidelines that I used when it came to choosing the colors of my children's nursery's.

1. Pick a calm soothing color. One that will satisfy your ability to relax because this is a place you maybe spending a lot of time in while you are changing their diapers, or feeding them. Some of those colors can be sea foam green, sky blue, light yellow's and even pale oranges.

2. Stay away from bold, loud colors that can tend to make you tense. You do not want to walk into a room that is bright blood red, or deep greens.

3. Try to think back to your own childhood and a favorite color you had when you were little. If that color made you feel comfort, or settled down then more then likely this will do the same for your own child.

4. You can pick a color for a nursery by the sex of a baby, like blue for boy or pink for girl. However, if you don't know the sex of the baby then try to stick with light greens and yellows for an unknown gender.

5. Pick a color that can grow with your child so you don't have to repaint it every year.

6. When you choose a theme for your child's nursery it is better to go with shapes, letters, animals or just stick with plain colors. I advise you not to decorate a nursery in a character theme just yet, only because a newborn baby really do not understand who that character is, and when they do, they might choose not have that character you picked as their favorite.

The main key factor in this big decision of picking a theme and color for any child's nursery is to do what suits you. Take a deep breathe and relax, and pick a color that you feel will work best for you and your child. Remember, if time passes and you don't like the color, you can always paint over it!
