Choosing the Right Rod for Today's Fisherman

In days of old, fishing was done with the use of a cane pole. Today technology has given us a multitude of different types of rods to choose from. Though cane poles are still used today they are no match for the rod and reel and are reminders of days gone by. Fishing technology is steady growing as is the sport of fishing.

The designs of today's fishing rods all have a taper to them. They are bigger at the handle and then get smaller towards the end of the pole. The fishing poles of today are made up of all kinds of different materials such as graphite, fiberglass, or boron composites. The casting distance and accuracy as well as the ability to with stand the amount of force of a struggling fish comes from the design and length of the fishing pole.

In this article we will discuss some of the various fishing rods available to today's fisherman.

The basic fishing rod of today - today's basic poles can range from 6 to 16 feet in length. For better performance in casting and ability to withstand the "fight" of a fish you need a longer rod.

The cane pole - bamboo is the most common material used in the construction of the cane pole. The most basics of line are attached to the cane pole. The cane pole is the utmost basic pole you can buy. There are no reels or fancy gadgets attached to this pole. Small ponds and creek beds are the best and most popular places for a cane pole to be used.

Spinning rods - The most popular fishing rod for today's fisherman is the spinning rod. These rods average between 5 and 7 feet long. They are made from either fiberglass or graphite and have a cork handle. Heavier fishing line is more flexible when used with a spinning rod and can be used to catch either lightweight or heavyweight fish.

Jigging rods - When going deep sea fishing a jigging rod is the best choice to use. Due to the unpredictable currents in the ocean a heavier rod is needed which is why the jigging rod is used. The proper depth of water for use with the jigging rod is at least 180 feet. Without the use of this heavier rod it will be harder to control the line much less the fish. Solid materials are used in the construction of jigging rods. Also when using a jigging rod you want use a heavier more sturdy line when in strong currents.These are some of the fishing poles of today's fisherman.
