Choosing the Right Type of Flooring for Your Home

Rachel Archer
When deciding on your flooring keep in mind about your future. If you don't have alot of time to clean, do not choose a flooring product that takes alot of time to upkeep. Do you or are you planning on having children or pets? Keep these in mind also when deciding. Are you remodeling in order to sell your home? If this is the case, take the time and input the cash for a good, attractive floor. You also need to take into consideration about the atmosphere you want. Is it a modern, country or artsy look you want. These are all key factors when deciding your purchase.

Carpeting
Carpeting is a great investment. Do not ever use carpeting in your bathroom or kitchen though. Excess moisture can be trapped into the carpeting and padding and can lead to mold growth. Carpeting is a great choice in all other rooms is you prefer a flooring that is easy to clean. Carpeting in light or medium shades is best. Dark colors will show lint, pet fur and dust bunnies if not vacuumed frequently. Beige or a light grey is a good choice. Also stick with a low pile carpet. Have a professional installer do this. They know how to lay the padding and they have special tools to stretch the carpet. Pick the best carpet you can afford. Keep it swept and clean up spills immediately. Invest in a steam cleaner so you can clean the carpeting one to two times a year.

Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is an excellent choice for your bathroom and kithcen. Once again, choose the best you can afford and have a professional installer do the job. Laminate flooring is very easy to take care of. A dust mop wil take care of the dust bunnies. You can use a wet mop to clean up spills, but do not let water stand on the floor too long. Excess steam and moisture may cause the tiles to become loose or may warp. Rugs in certain key areas can help with this. Laminate flooring, in my opinion, doesn't look right in other rooms of a home. You might find a style that will, though.

Hardwood Flooring
This is my favorite, but I just love the country look. Hardwood flooring is a great choice and you have plenty of species to choose from. Easy to care for, just run a dust mop over them. They should have a coat of wax, made for wood flooring, applied 3 to 4 times a year. You can find hardwood flooring in rustic, natural or distressed. There is a difference, so do your homework. A professional contractor should handle this.

Other
Do lots of research. If you want a green home, many places now offer flooring made from other recycled goos.

Floors make a statement so take your time and choose the best one that you can afford.
