Choosing a String Trimmer

Which One is Right for You?

Cheryl Bowman
String trimmers come in many different makes and models, but all have a few things in common: They all have an engine, to which a shaft is attached, then a trimmer head is attached to the shaft. Some trimmers have straight shafts, some have curved shafts. Some string trimmers use a roll of nylon trimmer string, while some use a single strand. Others use plastic blades. Always choose a string trimmer that best fits your situation. Remember, when comparing brand names, that when it comes to string trimmers, you get what you pay for.

Gas or Electric

A gas string trimmer is better than a gas trimmer for medium- to large-sized yards. You do not have to worry about a cord getting hung up, and the engine is more powerful. Gas trimmers are heavier than electric trimmers, but are more versatile and are better built than electric trimmers.

Straight or Curved Shaft

Straight-shaft trimmers are better for getting closer to and under fences and other objects. Curved-shaft trimmers have a curve near the bottom of the shaft, making the trimmer bulky and hard to get into small places. In general, straight shaft trimmers are heavier than curved shaft trimmers, but the inner workings of the straight shaft allow for a clutch to be added to the wheel. A trimmer with a clutch slows down or stops if it gets clogged with grass or runs into something too much for the trimmer to handle. This prevents shaft-wear and breakage.

Head Design

The head design that leaves little to no trouble and maintenance is the single-string head. The string does not get tangled as it does with the roll version. The single strings are inexpensive, unlike the plastic blades, which wear out quickly. Most trimmers come with the roll-string version, but can be changed out with the single-string head.

The Best Trimmer For You

The best string trimmer for you depends on the usage of the tool. If you have a small yard (less than 500 sq. ft.), the electric trimmer might be best, as it is lightweight, and can reach the yard with a long extension cord. If you have a medium- to large-sized yard, the gas string trimmer is best. If you have a lot of landscaping or use the trimmer weekly, the straight shaft is better than the curved shaft. The straight-shaft trimmers also have separate attachments, such as a tree saw, edger, cultivator and hedge trimmers. If you need the excess tools, a straight-shaft with attachments is the best deal.
