There are several reasons that waiting till you have an emergency to find a veterinarian is a mistake. First if you go and pre-register the vet will have all of your cats information on file which will save time in and emergency. Next if you are pre-registered you will be reminded when a vaccination is due and will be less likely to forget and miss one. Lastly it saves you the mad rush to find a veterinarian in an emergency.
You should find a local vet who is as close to you as possible. This will be invaluable in an emergency. Depending on what area of the country you live in this could be a fairly easy or very difficult task. The best vet in the world is little use if they live three hours away. Try to get recommendations from family or friends in the area. Also you may want to call the local ASPCA and see who they recommend. In the city areas where must of the vets patients are dogs and cats most vets will be used to handling cats. In the more rural areas vets may be more used to dealing with large animals. You should be sure that your vet is used to handling cats. Also don't forget cost when choosing a veterinarian. Be sure that you comparison shop prices.
Choosing a veterinarian is one of the most important things that you can do for your cat. If you follow these rules you will be sure to pick a good one.
