Chopin's Scherzo No. 2 in B Flat Minor

John Sarkis
This is the second of Chopin's four scherzos, and it's probably the least likely suspect for a scherzo. Although one thing that can be said about this composition is: it's the most famous of Chopin's scherzos.

The work is in ternary form (A-B-A musical form). The first section (A-section) kills just about any stereotype about the word scherzo meaning "joke" in German; the first section of this piece is very melodious, no doubt this has contributed a great deal to its fame! The second section (B) is also quite melodic. In fact: unlike Chopin's other scherzo's, this section (B) offers little if any contrast to the first section. The first section returns, and a very impassioned coda ends the work.

This piece has been played to death. However; if you're a beginner to classical music: it's a must! It's easy listening and requires little musical understanding.
