Chowderhead's Seafood Restaurant; A Review

Eva Gallant
Chowderheads is a little seafood restaurant located at the intersection of Routes One and 114 in the Oakhill Plaza., in Scarborough, Maine.

It's not a fancy place, but it's immaculately clean with sea-blue walls and colored wooden fish placed as though they are swimming around the dining area. The 20 to 25 tables with blue formica tops and blue padded chairs stand on a blue and white rubber tile floor. The place is cheery, with large windows admitting lots of light.

There's a walk-up counter where you place your order. The overhead signs list all the choices available: Seafood Chowder, Broiled, Fried or Grilled Fish, Pasta Salads, Rice Pilaf, Fries, Onion Rings and Sandwiches. The fish choices include salmon, haddock, scallops, shrimp, clams, and lobster. There are chicken fingers, chicken salad, and roast beef sandwiches for those who are not fond of fish. When your order is ready, your number is called, and you pick up your order at the counter and take it to your table. The prices are reasonable, and there are no waitresses tip.

Hubby chose the Bowl of Seafood Chowder (made with Scallops, Shrimp, and Haddock,) and half a tuna salad sandwich on fresh 7 grain bread. A homemade vegetable relish served as a garnish. This was a "special" priced at $6.95.

I had the Fish and Chips; a large piece of flaky fried haddock served with french fries and a lemon slice for $7.95. Both meals were delicious. The fish and fries were not greasy at all, and were fried in cholesterol free canola oil. Hubby's half sandwich was large, and the chowder here is among the best, packed with lots of scallops, shrimp and haddock.

Chowderheads is a great place to have a high quality, inexpensive seafood meal!
