Chris Daughtry: Another American Idol Failure

Brian
In terms of vocal talent, Chris Daughtry's voice is weaker than ever on his debut CD, Daughtry. His voice could be compared to a kind of country-rock. I was expecting something a tad bit heavier. The album is not at all diverse...contrary to my expectations. It appears Daughtry had to listen to the horrible advice spewed from the mouths of the label advising him as to what sells records. Prior to the release of Daughtry, Chris said in interviews that the album "will not be pop". However, songs such as "Home", "It's Not Over", and "Breakdown" suggest otherwise. These songs sound like a Nickelback pop song gone bad!

Don't worry quite yet, Chris! The Idol fans, who didn't provide you with enough votes to declare you as the winner, will purchase your CD merely because of your name. Honestly, can you blame them? You've been so publicized since your debut and this is the only Chris Daughtry item currently available. Lets pray they will not be disappointed by the unattractive lyrics of some of your tracks, however.

After listening to the album all the way through, I still believe Chris and Taylor Hicks have the best chance of a success lasting more than 15 minutes in the music industry if he follows his heart from now on.

What I believe to be the main problem is that all the songs on Daughtry are simply rock ballads. Did the producers instruct him to compose songs of this boring, dull type?

The album Daughtry is the epitome of what happens when the market research determines the creative control for a CD, instead of the actual artist. These songs will get old fast, as Chris Daughtry's other Idol runner-ups already have.

The overt lack of contrast between songs is quite a negative effect. Perhaps this is due to Chris Daughtry's potentially amazing singing voice. For some artists, recording a successful, quality CD may take up to a year. Therefore, time allows for the mood of the CD and creative drive changes that will ultimately vary the theme and mood of the songs on the final product. Considering this huge endeavor on Daughtry's part both started and ended relatively quickly, there may not have been enough time for this beneficial variation to occur. Let's not stay on the safe side next time, Chris, if he's fortunate enough to even have a next time.

Overall, I fear Chris will just become another washed up Clay Aiken wannabe who gained fifteen minutes of fame from an overly hyped, overly produced television show. Daughtry's star is currently dim and will continue dimming by the looks of the album Daughtry. However, by producing more diverse and original tracks, Chris' star has the amazing potential to overpower many of the other stars of his predecessors. I suggest he break from his contract and make money producing a diverse amount of songs instead of the same old content everybody is used to!

One word to sum it up: disappointing.

Bitter are we? Don't blame Daughtry for outselling Taylor Hicks' CD. The cream always rises to the top, and Taylor was outclassed by Daughtry in talent. Daughtry might not jump around on stage making a fool of himself, but the man can sing! If you can say that Crashed, There and Back Again, Over You, What I Want, and Breakdown are not amazing songs, you're biased.
