Chris Pronger's List of What to Expect in Philadelphia

A New Life in the City of Brotherly Love

During the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, the Anaheim Ducks learned that Scott Niedermayer and Teemu Selanne were coming back for another season in Orange County, but they also dealt away a key part of their defense.

For the fifth time in his career, Chris Pronger has been traded back to the Eastern Conference, where he was originally drafted in 1993 by the Hartford Whalers, 2nd overall.

Pronger, along with prospect Ryan Dingle were traded to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Luca Sbisa, and Joffrey Lupul, two first-round draft picks and a conditional third round pick.

This make a second stint in Anaheim for Lupul, as he was originally drafted by the, then Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

Pronger will fit in the Flyers organization. His mean streak and not being able to stay out of trouble goes good in Philadelphia. Pronger will definitely have his problems in the East compared to the West. Mainly his tendencies to have a short fuse when someone can get under his skin.

In the Pacific Division, where they play their division rivals the most out of any other division, you have Steve Ott on the Dallas Stars who can definitely get under players skins. In Phoenix you have hard nosed Shane Doan, in LA you have Dustin Brown and on San Jose, there's Joe Thornton and Ryane Clowe who have both given Pronger problems before. These are some of the player that get to Chris Pronger.

Now in the East, they're stronger and hit a lot harder and more frequently. Taking a look at their cross-state rivals, the 2009 Stanley Cup Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins have many players that can get under a players skin like Chris Pronger. Even the stars and the main pest can do a fine job of that. The Flyers are known to be a fiesty and rough team and Pronger adds a nasty element to his game and t he Flyers game, but bad penalties have been an issue with Pronger and the Flyers in the past.

Nevertheless, he does bring experience and Cup ring to the younger Flyers who are thriving for some success in the post-season. This is a huge step in the right direction on the defense, but the goaltending is still a question mark at this point.

A good trade by the Philly management, but they gave up quite a bit. Their future was given away but the Flyers are looking for right now. What a better way than to get a corner-stone defenseman.

His oatmeal and banana will be waiting for him in Philadelphia.

  • This is the 4th time he's been traded.
Chris Pronger was originally drafted 2nd overall by the former Hartford Whalers. He then was traded to the St. Louis Blues, and had been in the West Coast until now.
