As a writer I have always promised myself not to try and tell someone else's joke, especially when it comes to a professional comedian. The main reason; I don't have the delivery, jokes don't read well on paper, and I'm not nearly as funny as these guys - that's the bottom line though I hate to admit it. What I can tell you is, if you're fortunate enough to have Chris Rock appearing in your town, go see him in his element, live on stage and uncensored. Your laughter won't catch a break for the ninety minutes he commands the arena. Rock has never relied on his older material like some comedians have. Recycled jokes are never really the best way to go. Rock is on the top of his game socially, politically, and stands on the cutting edge with his own brand of commentary. What I can tell you is no one is safe. Obama, Hillary, McCain, Britney Spears, Michael Jackson, rap music and its artists, the war in Iraq, George W. Bush - they're all in the mix and then some. His 'in your face' truth about the world we live in, his own personal experiences in the biz and relationships according to Chris are all here and projected with humor and reverence that everyone can understand. Guys, if you're bringing your wife or girlfriend you're not safe either. Chris is going to get you. And ladies, don't think you're off the hook. Sometimes the truth is glaringly bright, especially when you get hit with a spotlight and razor sharp tongue and wit. His take on personal/romantic relationships is second to none. We're all going to get the business on this topic. There are no borders or lines drawn. Rock's audience is truly universal made up simply with people who want to laugh at the world and society but more importantly, at themselves.
If you're a timid person and not into foul language (spoiler alert) stay home. A Chris Rock show is not for you. Chris talks in layman terms and doesn't put on any pretense. He is who he is which is one of the reasons people can relate. This is not the comedian you've seen on television hosting the Oscars or MTV Awards. But if you're a Rock fan you already know what you're going to get. His stand-up DVD's are always at the top of the selling charts ("Never Scared," and "Bigger And Blacker," are classics) and his one night stand here at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida was sold out for weeks. If you want to laugh and have a good time check out Chris Rock live. You may leave the show with a stomach ache from laughing so hard but nowadays that's a great complaint to have, don't you think?
