Chris Wells: Heisman Favorite

The Ohio State Buckeyes Star Player

The Heisman trophy often goes to the best player on the best team, with that team usually headed to the National Championship as the favorite to win it all. Chris "Beanie" Wells is the clear favorite to win the Heisman trophy this year, not only because he is a spectacular athlete, but because the Ohio State Buckeyes are poised to win it all. Last season Chris ran for an astonishing 1,609 yards with 15 touchdowns while playing against the vaunted Big Ten defenses. If he can up those numbers ever so slightly, and lead the Ohio State Buckeyes to the national championship game, there is no way he won't be named the best player in college football.

I personally expect him to rush for over 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns and here's why. The Ohio State football schedule this year allows them to play teams that do not have great rush defenses, and that will give Mr. Wells a great opportunity to pile on stats that can't be ignored. Also, given that Todd Boeckman is not the greatest quarterback in the world, the Buckeye offense will have to use Chris as a workhorse, further upping his overall touches and opportunities. Lastly, Ohio State plays USC in the national spotlight giving Beanie a great opportunity to have an awesome game where everyone is watching. If Beanie runs for 200+ yards, and grabs a touchdown or two, while leading Ohio State to victory, he instantly will catapult himself into Heisman history.

His competition this year has never been more stiff, with a returning Heisman member in Tim Tebow, Georgia's Knowshon Moreno, Missouri's Chase Daniels, and West Virginia's Pat White, to name a few. These players all will put up great numbers, but their downfall will be that their team will not in national contention. All these teams, except possibly Tim Tebow and Florida, have regressed and no longer should be in the mix for winning a national championship. Now, you might be asking yourself, why not Tim Tebow then? Two reasons. One, the Heisman committee is not going to want to have another dual Heisman winner, in the same way that they don't want another defensive player to ever win it. Second, Tim Tebow got his numbers last year because Florida essentially had no running game, giving Tim more opportunities to run the football and pad his stats.

This leaves the only wise choice at Heisman as Chris "Beanie" Wells.
