Christian Counseling: Benefits of Psychology Infused with God

Carrine Guillaume
Christian counseling is a form of psychology with enormous benefits. It is much like regular psychological counseling but draws deeply from religious roots and guides the person seeking help to look deeper within their faith to better their problems. By using the Bible as the source for behavioral standards, Christian counseling helps individuals resolve life issues and better their relationship with God.

Christian counselors are most usually trustworthy pastors. While they are not required to be professionally trained psychologists, Christian counseling is usually carried out by licensed therapists.

Christian counseling follows secular psychology standards for mental illness evaluation. The added bonus and benefits of Christian counseling are that patients are more receptive to this kind of help and advice because it is infused with God's word.

One of the most marked benefits of Christian counseling would be guidance that is sensitive to the patients' religious orientation. With Christian counseling, the patient will receive advice to cope with issues in a manner consistent to their beliefs. This can prove most helpful.

As stated by the International Association of Biblical Counselors, the benefits of Christian counseling are achieved by pointing out and discussing with a patient where their decisions have deviated from the principles and commands of Scripture. Christian counseling helps individuals to learn how to lovingly submit to God's will. By using God's word (the Bible) as a clearly delineated standard on good morals, Christian counselors have more than just a "helpful opinion" to give their patients in times of need.

Differing from secular psychology in this most meaningful way is one of the greatest benefits of Christian counseling. Psychology bases its advice on modern society and its standards, and these opinions vary widely from person to person. This can make secular psychology easier to disregard by a patient. Christian counseling offers advice as breathed by God. The Bible is seen as the one and only truth, making the counseling session more visceral and worthwhile to the patient, not to mention a lot more difficult to just let the advice fall by the wayside.

Patients' benefits of Christian counseling come mainly from the trust they have in their faith to guide them to a better life. Success rates are much higher in Christian counseling because of the higher likeliness of them taking the counselors advice to better their situations and relationships.

A very important note on the subject of benefits of Christian counseling is the safe environment it provides as well. Talking to a pastor whom the patient knows to be a respected pastor in their area is a relieving and more personal experience. A Christian counselor is deemed more trustworthy than a virtual stranger paid to listen to their ordeals.

By having God's word applied to any of life's situations, Christian counseling can benefit anyone. The benefits of Christian counseling extend to any personal problem. Be it depression, anxiety, marital issues, or just wanting to feel closer to God, Christian counseling can aid in living a more balanced and moral lifestyle.
