Christian Vote: Pro Choice

Should a Christian Vote for a Pro-Choice Candidate

Charisse Van Horn
Christian Vote: Pro Life

I know that many Christians are torn, or maybe resolute, that they will absolutely not vote for a president who is pro-choice. If you've read my Radiant God blog, then you will know my testimony regarding my abortion and how I believe that was the greatest mistake of my life. As a Christian, and someone who doesn't believe in abortion, I have been asked how I could ever vote for a candidate that is pro-choice. Here is my answer to all that wonder how a Christian who doesn't believe in abortion could vote for a pro-choice candidate.

Abortion is legal. Abortion has been legal throughout George Bush's presidency. Yes, there has been great progress with partial birth abortion, but the fact is that women have had abortions since Roe vs. Wade, and before. If I vote for Obama, I am not voting for abortion. Abortion is already legal and babies are dying every day. I do not believe that our government has ever, nor will it ever, force women to have abortions against their will. Yes, I want abortion to be overturned and outlawed. I believe that life begins at conception. I have had an abortion. I have also had eight children. I understand that there is a "falsity" that occurs when a woman has an abortion. Typically, I believe, that a woman is under so much emotional stress due to an unwanted pregnancy, that she will lie to herself and convince herself that what she is doing is morally okay, that it isn't really a baby, and that the baby will be better off if never born. However, none of these beliefs changes the fact that abortions are continuing every day, regardless of whether Bush or Al Gore was in office. If a woman does not want to have an abortion, she doesn't have to have one.

I believe that the best way to deal with abortion is to reach out to teens in need. If you are a Christian, and feel torn over voting pro-choice, then don't. But I would also like to know how you interact with the young girl in your church. You know, that fifteen year old girl in the youth group who is sexually active. That's the girl that you don't want your teen son to look at, or your teen daughter to be friends with. What about her? What are you doing to prevent abortion in your own community? Are you volunteering at the teen crisis center? Are you talking to teens who are considering abortion? Are you engaging in peaceful non-violent protests- the type of protests that have been proved time and time again to be the most effective at creating social change?

What about the girl who isn't in your youth group? Are you reaching out to the teens in your community? The ones who have been sexually abused and became teen mothers because they were sexually aware at a young age? Are you taking them under your wing, nurturing them, and helping them to develop better parenting skills? What about the street prostitute, the teen girl who is on drugs, the runaway, have you helped her find a place to live so she can carry out her pregnancy in a secure environment?

Have you started outreach programs in your church, in your community, to help promote abstinence? What are you doing to help the teens in your area who are considering abortions?

Are you praying about abortion? More than praying for laws to be overturned, are you praying for the teens that you have direct interaction with? Are you praying for the sons and daughters of your community, in your church, in your home?

Yes, I can vote for a candidate who is pro-choice, because abortion is legal and I don't believe that there is a candidate out there who is going to ban abortion, and even if they did, who is going to help the young girls who are pregnant, until someone begins to help the girls throughout their pregnancy, abortion will exist, legal or illegally? I can vote for a candidate who shares different views about abortion because I know that I can help on a local level, on a one-to-one basis, on a personal face-to-face encounter with a young girl in trouble. I can share my experiences of what abortion is, what it did to me, and how I regret it. Yes, I want laws changed, but the reality is that girls and women are still having abortions. There is still a great amount of work that can be accomplished on a personal level. There are so many issues that America is dealing with right now. Abortion isn't the only one.

This article defends killing on the thought that a young baby may not feel the pain of the death experience. Does that make it right? Is receiving a needle through through the vein that would ultimately destroy our lives without feeling anything justifiable? Would you allow someone to do that to you? Wait, there's no pain......!!! One issue does matter and it's absolutely not judging. God calls us to expose sins and bring them to light. Remember this foolish ones, if we consider voting for a man who is pro-choice because we believe not voting for him would be judging him. If we believe that we are not to hold someone acccountable for their support of THOUSANDS of murders of children a day....because....it would be judging them, then my question to you is......were we judging wrongfully when we stopped Hitler in his rampage? ... is the answer for lasting transformation in our country. We simply must pray for change of heart and not forget compassion. Do we advocate what we believe? Sure. But let's realize there are other issues that are equally important to the heart of God. God warns against the belief that one is too holy to sin/fall. In my opinion, these are the ones who often fall the hardest.

.. count yourself blessed. But I would say, do not judge, b/c in their place you might do differently.

I voted for Obama b/c I feel he's the best candidate. I looked at all the issues and I don't agree with everything he stands for or proposes, but I do agree with him more than with McCain.

Just b/c Obama is pro-choice doesn't make him all bad and mean that we must ignore anything else he has to say. If so, why don't we as Christians also ignore what McCain had to say, as he acquired his second wife through an adulterous affair. God is also against adultery and values the family. McCain violated God's wishes through his own actions, whereas Obama has obviously never had an abortion himself--he just has compassion for those who feel that's their only choice.

Let us not forget as Christians that we reside with those that are non-Christians. I don't believe we win them over through condemnation. I don't believe legislating our Christian beliefs is the answer for last

I, too, have come to the conclusion that I am a pro-choice Christian. It doesn't bother me that some people may question my Christianity b/c of the position I take. I am secure enough in my Christianity to open myself to scrutiny and I feel that only in communicating do we begin to understand one another's plight.

In my lifetime, I have learned that lasting transformation of the heart will come only through Jesus Christ. As Christians, we are so quick to cast stones at other people without looking at the imperfections (some of them huge) in our own lives. I don't believe in abortion. I think there's always another answer. But that's my viewpoint. I've never found myself in the position that these women who have abortions must feel that they are in. I believe that most women do not make a decision to abort without feeling extreme desperation and feeling there was no other way. If you have never gotten to a place of extreme darkness and desperation in your life, count yours

    Hi Gary,

President Obama already won, what is the point in debating. But anyway, to answer your question- the reason I voted for Obama is because although I disagree with abortion, no woman is forced to have an abortion in this country against her will. Therefore, it isn't my number one issue. If America forced women to have abortions against their will, like in China, it would be my number one issue. Since every woman has an opportunity to be ministered to by the church, and since pro life groups have the right to speak out against abortion, it isn't my number one concern.

As a person professing to be a Christian, why would you stand with anyone who would promote, accept, expand or help make available a process in which life would be ended? Just because the law of the land says its legal doesn't mean it is moral. Killing of an innocent child is unjust. Barrack Obama has pledged to sign into law the Freedom of Choice Act which will allow partial birth abortions up to and including 9 months. Because of your support it will be near impossible to eliminate abortion forever!

By voting for a pro-choice candidate, you are agreeing with their platform and agenda. You would have been better off not to vote at all instead of justifying it through your website and now, even worse, misleading others with rationalization of your act!

Even if you get others to agree with you doesn't make it right or relieve you of the responsibility of your despicable action. Best Wishes, I will not continue debating with one who obviously did not learn from their past mistak

    Hi Gary,
I guess it all depends on your meaning of the word Pro LIfe. Do I believe every baby who is conceived is a human being upon conception-
    Yes
Do I believe that every baby has the right to be born
    Yes
Do I believe that abortion will ever be eradicated in the United States
    No

You are not pro-life if you vote for a pro-choice (pro-abortion) candidate. You are deceiving yourself. In James it is written that a double minded person will be unstable in all their ways. That may explain why you can feel good about your position.

Simply, you are putting all the other issues above a defenseless unborn child! That also means you agree with homosexual marriage as it has been deemed legal in some states. You may want to consider whom you truly serve.
