Christianity and the Republican Party 2008

What is Your View on This?

Rose Richmond
I have heard John McCain and Sarah Palin during every interview and every stump speech talk about their judeao-christian beliefs. How they are against abortion because it is murder. Against sex education for schools, because that appears to promote promiscuous behavior which is against the beliefs of all Christians. They talk about being the "Straight Talk Express" which would tell you presumably that they promote telling the truth.

Yet over and over and over again that turns out not to be the case here. As I can best decipher from my years of growing up in the deep south in the Southern Baptist Teachings, they are pretty much full of crap. A better name for their campaign might be the "Fence Straddler Express". They straddle the fence so they can fall over to which ever side looks the best at the time.

Lets first see exactly what the term Judeao-Christian means as far as what they believe. According to an exact description by Wikipedia, the term Judeao-Christian means:

In the American context, historians use the term Judeo-Christian to refer to the influence of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament on Protestant thought and values, most especially the Puritan, Presbyterian and Evangelical heritage.
These founding generations of Americans saw themselves as heirs to the Hebrew Bible, and its teachings on liberty, responsibility, hard work, ethics/honesty, justice, equality, a sense of choseness and an ethical mission to the world, which have become key components of the American character, what is called the "American Creed."
These ideas from the Hebrew Bible, brought into American history by Protestants, are seen as underpinning the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Other authors are interested in tracing the religious beliefs of America's founding fathers, emphasizing both Jewish and Christian influence in their personal beliefs and how this was translated into the creation of American institutions and character.

Now that we have the common description that most Americans go by to judge whether or not they have Judeao-Christian beliefs, lets look at what McCain and Palin actually do in there TRUE walk in the Christian faith.

With that in mind, do you believe John McCain and Sarah Palin are standing for those beliefs? I would say that of the McCain clan and the Palin clan they have missed quite a few of these. Responsibility is one of the first. John McCain will directly lie on tv to the American public and when called on it, he runs as fast as he can to avoid responsibility. Sarah Palin has been accused of lying and of trying to avoid the Troopergate affair, she has been proven to have lied about the Bridge To Nowhere. She lied about her trip to Iraq. She has lied on various other issues. Again when called out on it, she avoids taking any responsibility.

Hard Work.....Ok, this one can be interpreted several ways. John McCain hasn't done the hard work that should have been done in Washington before he ever ran for President. He didn't change things when he could have. He has so many houses and cars he can't remember how many. He hasn't gotten dirt on his hands from working ever.
He worked hard to make it impossible to keep up with businesses like AIG or Bear Stearns or Fannie Mae. He wanted them to have complete control over their disclosures they made to the government. He wanted them to be totally unregulated. Now in the time since he did this, billions of dollars have been fraudulently taken by CEO's and others. He wanted them to have little or no regulation no matter how much GOVERNMENT money they used. We are seeing the results of that hard work today.

Sarah Palin worked hard to get elected to an office that she gave herself a raise in. She worked hard to tell on anyone in her way for whatever she could find they had done wrong. She worked hard to keep the money for the Bridge To Nowhere project of which they just built a road for $25 million dollars that takes the general public TO the Bridge To Nowhere that isn't there. (According to officials it will be good for the hikers and the hunters) $25 MILLION Folks! She also worked hard to reject funding for Special Needs families in Alaska, BEFORE she had Trig!

She worked hard to cover up the Troopergate situation. She tried hard to convince us that she was still a good parent even though her daughter has been a promiscuous teenager for long before she became pregnant. I am just not sure that is what the original description of the word in this context meant.

Honesty....Well here is one for the record books. I can't even begin to list all of the lies associated with this McCain/Palin campaign. From the beginning of John McCain's nomination, he started with whatever sounded good. That has been a continuing act. No matter the venue, he is guaranteed to lie at least once and most of the time, several times. Then he will get mad if you don't believe him or question him on it.

Justice.....This one is a real kick in the pants for the Judeao-Christian pair. Justice is not on the menu for this potential entry into the White House. It has already begun folks. If you don't see this, I am not responsible when you actually do see it. Sarah Palin has been by declaration of McCain and crooked attorneys, absolved from her connection to "Troopergate". No matter what you think, if they are elected, this thing will never see the light of day. I cannot imagine the dirty politics going on in regards to this case. The pressure the people who filed and followed up on this thing must be enormous.

Otherwise, they would call the Alaskan Senate back to session before January. If she gets elected what happens if she were convicted on abuse of power? That is why there will be no justice in this case if they are elected. They are manipulating as we speak. No Justice if you are one of the elite with power.

Equality....Another problem for the McCain/Palin ticket. They couldn't possibly feel equal to 95% of America. Sarah Palin is actually closer than John McCain but not really. McCain has continued to run ads with very racist connotations to them. He is just an good ole white boy himself. I would be willing to bet he has voiced a few choice terms for Barack Obama. Sarah Palin has never lived anywhere in her life where she dealt on a daily basis with black folks. How is she going to identify with something she knows very little about?

Choseness...Well of all of the ones they didn't get right, this one is right on. This means special uniqueness. Yes they do feel they are special and unique..

Ethical Mission to the World.....This one just makes me laugh. When you hear them with all of the lies and sidesteps and non-answers or crazy answers, you know already that they have no concern for the World. Much less an ethical mission to it. They have lied America. They have fumbled every answer they have been asked. The answer is either to switch the question, avoid it altogether, get cocky and angry or give some off the wall answer that doesn't answer anything.

This is the strong Judeao-Christian leaders who are asking YOU America! WILL YOU AMERICA, TRUST US JOHN AND SARAH TO TAKE CARE OF AMERICA?
My understanding of being a Christian and mind you, I am not an expert, is telling the truth, helping others, not being lazy and living your life according to the 10 commandments.

I can count at least 4 that between the two of them they have broken.

Thou shalt not kill. Mccain sent our soldiers in with his blessing to face death for a lie that he supported without question.

Thou shalt not commit adultery. Well we know what the deal is here. Old story but still valid in heaven.

Thou shalt not steal. Sarah Palin has taken per diems for her family, gave herself a raise, charged the state of Alaska for unethical charges and kept the money from the Bridge To Nowhere. Taxpayer money.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. This is too long to list. Every lie that they have told against Barack Obama. False witness.

If you are going to stand in front of the American public and spout Christian beliefs, then don't be a hypocrite! If you are purposely going to lie, cheat and steal your way into office, then leave out the part about the Christianity.

I am a firm believer in you reap what you sow. Another Christian belief. John McCain and Sarah Palin are professing in front of God and everybody within ear shot that they are Christians. They SAY they believe in God and what the Bible says.

I don't think I want to be standing nearby when the reaping part begins. Lies, manipulation and all of the other acts they have committed are not the acts of TRUE Christians. They are a facade that if America is paying attention will come out before it is too late.

Pray for Justice here America. Vote for truth.

As someone who drank the Kool Aid in 1990 (when I was 22) and registered Republican in part because of my religious beliefs, I feel bamboozled. My parents remain liberal Democrats and devout Catholics. I see no reason why either my parents or I have to be a certain political party based on our Christian beliefs. I was a social conservative as a young person and parent, now that I've seenmore of life I'm a little less rigid. I won't vote Republican in November (except locally) because McCain and Palin do not stand for what I believe this Republic represents. One is too cozy with special interests and too quck to pull the trigger (literally) and the other is ill-equipped to hold national office. They simply do not respect other points of view.

With McCain.. at least I used to respect the dude before... until his chummying up with W and campaigning for that crook's re-election. I'm afraid it has all been downhill since then with him. :o( Palin... From her fact-challenged first speech at the Republican Convention on I think her nose has grown 6 inches longer and I wonder if she'll ever get the stench of burned pants out of her closet... seeing as the spinning-lie-induced spontaneous wardrobe combustion syndrome appears to be particularly virulent in her presence... Anyhow! I'm encouraged to see many Christians who see through their attempt to hijack the religion to serve their own political agenda. Kudos and keep writing! :o)

Henry, McCain is the one spouting what a Good Christian he is. Had you read the article, you would know that I didnt say vote for Obama. I said McCain is a huge hypocrite. He says he is Christian but yet lies on every turn. You vote for whomever you feel you should. How anyone with even a half an ounce of sense can see he is a liar and a thief. But go for it. If you are so Republican that it doesn't matter how bad the country gets screwed, then jump buddy. I don't hate you. I feel sorry for you...

  • Henry9/24/2008

So, this means I shouldn't vote for McCain because this guy is absolutely Gospel? Then let's talk about Ayers and Jeremiah Wright, etc. and there will be people who will tell you Obama is not all that. Just stop.

  • margaret cash9/24/2008

Yep, as long as you label yourself 'pro-life" you are God's gift to this country, and all the little sheep will follow and even repeat the terrible things you say about people who have character, intellect and basic morality in leadership. McCain and Palin are basically moral people, but he is not a leader and she is too controlling and too personal. And each is very comfortable lying about their achievements or mischaracterizing them (keep the money, don't build the bridge; fire my brother in law, or else!; have no ties to the mortgage industry, etc.). They keep the dialogue in the gutter, something that is very unChristian and then say because THEY are the real Christians it must be the other guy who is wrong. No thank you.

continuing loss of individual freedoms, especially regarding moral and religious issues John is not a religious person, but he has taken every opportunity to ally himself with some really obnoxious and crazy fundamentalist minister. I was also disappointed to see him cozy up to Bush because I know he dislikes that man. He disingenuously and famously put his arm around the guy, even after Bush had intensely disrespected him with lies and slander. So on these and many other instances, I don't see that John is the "straight talk express" he markets himself to be.
Senator John Sidney McCain III is a remarkable man who has made enormous personal achievements. And he is a man that I am proud to call a fellow POW who "Returned With Honor." That's our POW motto. But since many of you keep asking what I think of him, I've decided to write it out. In short, I think John Sidney McCain III is a good man, but not someone I will vote for in the upcoming election to be our President of the United St

I can verify that John has an infamous reputation for being a hot head. He has a quick and explosive temper that many have experienced first hand. Folks, quite honestly that is not the finger I want next to that red button.
It is also disappointing to see him take on and support Bush's war in Iraq, even stating we might be there for another 100 years. For me, John represents the entrenched and bankrupt policies of Washington-as-usual. The past 7 years have proven to be disastrous for our country. And I believe John's views on war, foreign policy, economics, environment, health care, education, national infrastructure and other important areas are much the same as those of the Bush administration.
I'm disappointed to see John represent himself politically in ways that are not accurate. He is not a moderate or maverick Republican. On some issues he is a maverick. But his voting record is far to the right. I fear for his nominations to our Supreme Court, and the consequent continuing lo

But he was intent on breaking every USNA regulation in our 4-inch thick USNA Regulations book. And I believe he must have come as close to his goal as any midshipman who ever attended the Academy. I could tell many midshipman stories about John that year and he unbelievably managed to graduate though he spent the majority of his first class year on restriction for the stuff he did get caught doing. In fact, he barely managed to graduate, standing fifth from the bottom of his 800-man graduating class. I and many others have speculated that the main reason he did graduate was because his father was an admiral, and also his grandfather, both U.S. Naval Academy graduates.
People often ask if I was a Prisoner of War with John McCain. My answer is always "No, John McCain was a POW with me." The reason is I was there for 8 years and John got there 2 ½ years later, so he was a POW for 5 ½ years. And we have our own seniority system, based on time as a POW.
    John's treatment as a POW
