Christina Aguilera Flubs the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV

Football Fans Proudly Watch Till Pop Star Loses Lyrics

ARLINGTON, Texas - Platinum blonde pop star Christina Aguilera flubbed the lyrics of the American National Anthem, singing in to a capacity crowd in Dallas Cowboys Stadium to open Super Bowl XLV on Sunday, February 6, 2011.

Sometimes a mantel filled with Grammy Awards just isn't enough. Christina Aguilera, who currently appears on the big screen in "Burlesque" with Cher, may have assumed her star power would carry her through. After all, Christina Aguilera belted out the National Anthem for the 2010 NBA Playoffs just last spring.

But she should have boned up on America's hymn of patriotism. After all, accuracy counts with Americans.

Immediately after Lea Michele, star of "Glee," rocked the house with her rendition of "America the Beautiful," with on-screen camera close-ups showing approving nods from former U.S. President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, the military color guard lined up proudly for the American National Anthem.

The Green Bay Packers and the Pittsburgh Steelers stood boldly, with their helmets pressed to their chests.

It went downhill from there.

Christina Aguilera left out the ramparts, over which "The Star Spangled Banner" lyricist Francis Scott Key watched the "rocket's red glare" and the "bombs bursting in air" in 1814.

Immediately, the blogosphere exploded. Twitterers tweeted. Facebook statuses updated. And countless cyberchatters assailed the 30-year-old songbird for her inaccurate histrionics.

Well, we guess Christina Aguilera will not be appearing on "Don't Forget the Lyrics" or "The Singing Bee" any time soon.

Don't quit your day job, Christina.

Here are the actual lyrics to the American National Anthem, just in case next year's Super Bowl honored musical guest needs to study up ahead of time - or if any sporting event should ever dare to invite Christina Aguilera to do the patriotic honors again.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Another fact people don't know is that is only one verse of the anthem.

Poor Christina, we Americans sure don't miss a chance to bring a person down. We all make mistakes even at things we know so well..it's human nature!

  • Karen Sanders2/7/2011

I feel bad for her. Everyone makes mistakes, and yes, it was a big mistake to make at such a huge event but I cannot believe the amount of fuss it has caused!

    Excellent reporting.

I agree that you can jazz up just about any song you wan. However, the national anthem should be sung as it was written. Otherwise what is the point of having it be the national anthem?

  • Theresa Wiza2/7/2011

All I can say is that I'm glad millions of people don't point out my mistakes.

Maybe her nerves took over...it happens to the best of us.

Why fuss over the lyrics? Look at all the jazzing-up, souling-up, rocking-out of the "melody" singers have been doing since Hendrix played it at Woodstock. It was original and eye-opening when Jimi did it--but everything after has been a lame copy and boring.

I have been performing the anthem since I was 7 years old, and I must say the Super Bowl is a dream come true," the singer said today in a press release. "I am really excited to be part of such an iconic event."
