COMMENTARY | Tea Party darling Christine O'Donnell walked out in the middle of her interview on "Piers Morgan Tonight" show Wednesday after stating that she felt Morgan was being rude, according to USA Today. Watching the video of their conversation, I am struggling to see how the interviewer is construed as being anything but polite. O'Donnell was on the show to promote her book, "Trouble Maker: Let's Do What It Takes to Make America Great Again." She stated that the book talks about her religious views, including gay rights and same sex marriage.
If O'Donnell thinks these issues are so important in her effort at "making America great," why isn't she willing to discuss them? I'm confused. Was her interview just a setup to get her name in the spotlight again, or did she have a legitimate excuse to rudely walk out during the conversation?
Maybe there's another reason for her baffling end to the interview. Members of the Tea Party famously seem to believe they are being attacked when they have difficulty answering a question. Perhaps O'Donnell was afraid to become involved in an intelligent discussion involving gay rights for fear of appearing ignorant or, dare I say, "witchy?"
O'Donnell does have a way of inserting her foot right into her mouth. Last fall she was mocked for the ad declaring, "I am not a witch!" Taken out of context, or even within context, those words can have a variety of meanings, and was probably not one of the smarter things she has done.
Another Tea Party lovely, Michele Bachmann, has given us endless fodder with some of her answers to interview questions. She called John Quincy Adams one of America's Founding Fathers who "worked tirelessly to end slavery." Adams was not a founding father, nor did our Founding Fathers work tirelessly to end slavery.
A rather long book could be written about the errors Bachmann has made, but most of us already know that. Moving on, another Tea Party member and potential GOP candidate, Sarah Palin, has famously accused Katie Couric of giving her impossible questions to answer. Palin became flabbergasted when asked which news magazines she read; instead of admitting how foolish she looked, she took her own ridiculous shots at Couric.
Perhaps it's time these women realize it might look better for them to admit their ignorance rather than act like a bunch of whining toddlers trying to take the heat off their own shortcomings.
