Christmas Anticipation - the Best

JUNEANN REED
Oh my, the house is such a mess
You see, we're putting up the tree,
And lots of other decorations
To be enjoyed by friends and family.

Good smells are wafting through the house
The cards are piled high,
The mailman just left a great big box
And Dad is wondering why.

My Dad, you know, enjoys it most
When he can lean back in his easy chair,
But he finally gets in the holiday spirit
When Christmas is almost here.

I hear lots of paper crinkling
After Mom made me go to bed,
I also heard Dad hammering
And I think some bad words were said.

I dream lots these winter nights
What will Santa bring?
Will I get that brand new bike
Guess I'll be happy with most anything.

'Cause Santa brings the best, you know
And his elves always put it together,
Good thing he does, because you see
My Dad?...let's just say Santa will do it better.

Grandma and Aunt Liz called today,
They'll be coming on Christmas Eve,
We'll sing carols and we'll go to church
To hear the Christmas story and get sacks of candy when we leave.

I can hardly sleep just thinking about it
Please God, make the days hurry by,
Mom says she wishes things would slow down
Gosh, sis and I wonder WHY?

'Tis Christmas night and all is passed
Gifts open, family gone and all,
My bike is red and shiny
But wouldn't you know - we just had a big snow fall.

I think I ate too much fudge and stuff
My tummy hurts a lot,
My cousin kicked me in the leg
And wouldn't you know, HE didn't even get caught.

My Dad had a big band aid on his thumb
It seemed to hurt him all the day,
He started to mumble something to Mom
But she just smiled and watched my sis play.

Mom has the kitchen cleaned up again
Oh my, it was a heck of a mess,
Uncle Fred slid his pie right onto her new carpet
She just said something like "God Bless."

All in all our Christmas was great
The food, gifts, church and all,
But, you know, I think the days before
Yes, that anticipation - I'll always recall.

God knows we need a little excitment with the cold weather and all. The anticipation is worth it.I love your poem.
