Many local churches and schools collect food and clothing for the poor, provide Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, and even give Christmas presents to children.
Social service organizations also provide assistance for the holidays. If you are already in the system for various social welfare programs, ask your caseworker to put your name on their approved list of Christmas charity recipients.
It is very important for you to start looking for help as soon as possible. Most of the resources available through these organizations are distributed quickly.
Check your local paper, the library, and even Craig's List for announcements for events that are being held in your area. Many events such as free dinners and winter coat distribution programs will be happening throughout the holiday season.
Here is a list of a few organizations that offer Christmas assistance to those in need:
Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots is a program that is sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps which gives brand new gifts to children. The toys are usually distributed December 23 and 24. You can request toys on their website.
Salvation Army
The Salvation Army has always been a tremendous help to those in need during the holidays. They offer programs such as Thanksgiving Meal Delivery, Adopt-A-Family, Dress-A-Child, Toy & Joy Store, Christmas Food Distribution, and many more. You can find the location nearest to you on their website.
Project Angel Tree
Project Angel Tree, in conjunction with Chuck Colson's Prison Fellowship Ministry and local churches, gives new gifts to children whose parents are in jail.
Freecycle.org
Although they are not a charitable organization (they focus on recycling), Freecycle.org gives people the opportunity to give (and get) stuff for free in their own towns. Simply search for your city to see what items are available. You may be able to find toys, coats, and more for your family this holiday season.
There are numerous organizations and groups that will help your family receive meals, gifts, and more. There is really no reason for you or your children to go without this Christmas holiday. Google your area for additional local events and services that may be available in your town.
Remember, you don't have to feel ashamed when it comes to receiving help this holiday season. Most of us have experienced hard times. There is no shame in asking for help when you really need it. The good news is it gives others a chance to be a blessing to someone else and that is always a good thing. Isn't that what it is all about?

Greetings to all this year. I am a hard working mother of 4 children ages 2,4,11,and 15 years old. Weve had a terrible year .And no matter how hard I work as a full time mom with a full time job I just cant seem to make ends meet to have my children this year a giving christmas, that they are looking to see from me "mom" this year . last year was not good for them either but they did not complain, but I could see the hurt in there eyes and faces looking for more, but mommy could not afford to give them more then what they recieved which was 1 toy each for each child that was all I could afford. I know that times are rough and really rough for me . Exspecially me being adopted since birth and living the "low income household" in the bad neighbor hoods ,with my fostermom doing the best she could for her us. I am looking for someone that would like to adopt our family for Christmas. I have four kids 2 girls ages 12 and 10 and 2 boys ages 16 and 4. I know Christmas is not about gifts but our family has been through a lot this year and I just want to be able to see my kids with smiling faces again. On 9/9/11 my dad passed away suddenly and it has taken a toll on the entire family. My husband was involved in a head on collision 2 weeks later and it totaled the only car that we had. They said it was a miracle that he survived the accident at all. If you know of any churchs or anything please let me know. Thank you
