First, select the holiday books you want to read with your family. You can pick short books, long books, board books, chapter books, serious books, funny books, books for any age and reading level. If your children are of broad age ranges and reading levels, pick a variety of books to please everyone.
It may not be cost-effective or practical to go out and buy an entire collection of Christmas-themed books. Start with what you have. If you have five Christmas books already, plus the Christmas story in The Bible, and decide to purchase one new book for each of your three children, you already have nine books to read during your countdown of the days until Christmas.
Count back from Christmas Day the number of books you have to find the day you will start your reading countdown. Once your countdown begins, have each child take a turn unwrapping one book per night. Depending on reading level of the books and your children, you can also take turns reading the books.
Here are some additional tips and variations for making this fun Christmas tradition special for your family.
Store your Christmas book collection with your Christmas decorations. Get them out and wrap them as part of your holiday decorating. Involve the children in wrapping the books. Make sure that you wrap any new books alone so they will be a surprise for the kids. You can keep the wrapped books under your Christmas tree, or in a big basket in the family room, as part of your holiday décor.
Number the books for each night. This will help you select a shorter book for a busy night, or plan for other similar circumstances.
Read the Christmas story from The Bible on Christmas Eve.
Select a Christmas-themed chapter book or two and read one chapter each night leading up to Christmas.
Read a holiday-themed book for each night of Hanukkah.
Your Christmas book tradition can even replace bedtime stories during the holidays - if your children let it!
This wonderful tradition will help you continue to cultivate a love of reading in your children's lives and allow you to spend time together as a family each night during this busy time of year.
