Christmas Break Activities for Students near Sacramento, California

Sacramento, California, is an excellent place to have some time off from school during the Christmas, or winter, break. Sacramento's close proximity to the Sierra Nevada mountains means that it is only an hour long drive, or so, to get to an area with snow. Going to the snow, whether for a day trip, or overnight, is a great way to have fun and stay active.

For those who like to ski or snowboard, the Sacramento region has a lot to offer someone on their Christmas break. Located approximately an hour and a half from the Sacramento area are a few ski and snowboarding resorts, including Boreal and Sugar Bowl. These spots are excellent for a day trip, but due to the relatively small size of these recreation areas, they may get a bit boring for an overnight trip. Only a half hour, or so, further away than these resorts are the more major resorts of Kirkwood and Squaw Valley, among others. Featuring resort style amenities, including restaurants and bars, these winter fun destinations have something for everyone. Even for people who do not ski or snowboard, other snow related activities are offered, including ice skating, sledding and snowshoeing.

While going to the snow is a great option, some may prefer to stay closer to home. In addition to offering a great shopping experience, the Westfield Shoppingtown mall, in downtown Sacramento, has an ice skating rink set up specially for the holidays. Students of any age will enjoy this Sacramento area Christmas break activity. As the seat of California's state government, Sacramento features many government buildings that are decorated for Christmas, including a large Christmas tree that is set up in front of the State Capitol building. Taking an evening stroll through the downtown area with a date, or a few friends, is a great way to spend an evening during a Christmas break.

For those who are 21 and over, Sacramento has a number of fun nightspots that often have Christmas themed events. Azukar and Club 21 are two of Sacramento's hottest nightspots. Azukar features multiple stories with an upscale crowd, the music played is generally popular hip-hop music. Club 21 features dancers and often, a more laid back crowd that some of the other hot nightspots. There are many other nightspots in Sacramento's Midtown area that are frequented by people during the winter season. For those who are under 21, there are plenty of restaurants and other attractions near downtown Sacramento, including salsa classes, that can keep even the most discriminating student occupied during their break from school.
