Christmas on a Budget for Newlyweds

ED Watts
For most people, when you first get married, money can be tight. After taking care of the wedding expenses, honeymoon, and setting up the house, there might not be a lot of cash for the first Christmas together. Even if newlyweds don't have a lot to spend on Christmas, they can still make it enjoyable and memorable.

Exchange Stockings

If you and your spouse are worried about spending too much on Christmas gifts, then fill a stocking for each other with thoughtful, yet inexpensive gifts and candy.

Spending Limit

Set a spending limit on gifts and stick to it. Don't make exceptions for a few dollars here and there because it will add up.

Draw Names

Suggest drawing names with your family so you and your spouse won't have to buy Christmas gifts for everyone if money is really tight. A lot of people might appreciate the idea since they won't be as pressed for money this Christmas season.

Shop for Used Decorations

Check out thrift and consignment stores for inexpensive used Christmas decorations. You could find a tree, ornaments, and other things you can use to decorate for a much lower price than if you bought new.

Make Decorations

Try making your own Christmas decorations to save money. Make a small Christmas tree out of cardboard tubes and pipe cleaner and thread popcorn on a string to hang on the tree. It is cute and people will admire your creativity.

Discount Grocery Stores

Stores like Aldi offer discounted grocery items. Don't be afraid to try different brands and you can save up to half on your baking costs.

Do the Cooking

It can be tempting to go out for an expensive meal to celebrate your first Christmas together, but make dinner at home. A small turkey or ham, sides, wine, and dessert can cost a lot less than going out, plus you get the benefit of enjoying a private meal together.

Visit the Parents

If either of your parents lives in town, then eat with them. You save money and time by not having to do any cooking or dining out, plus you get to hang out with your family.

Send E-Cards

Find an e-card online and send it to the relatives and friends that have internet access. This will save money on buying cards and stamps and will give you a little extra time to focus on other things.

Buy a Web Cam

Instead of buying plane tickets to visit out of state family this Christmas, use web cams to "visit" on Christmas and to speak to all of your relatives. This might seem like an odd suggestion, but you will save a lot of money on travel and you still get to see your family on Christmas.
