Cake Decorating Tips for the Holidays

Amy Brantley
Everyone wants to create something that will make their Christmas guests stare in awe. One way to create such a Christmas masterpiece is to decorate a cake. A cake can be decorated in a thousand different ways to create something truly beautiful and festive. This year, why not decorate a Christmas cake that is sure to be the hit of the party? Please note that these are just decorating suggestions, not baking tips.

Christmas Cake Ideas: Winter Wonderland Theme

A winter wonderland cake starts with a chocolate cake base that is then frosted with a vanilla frosting. To create the look of snow, simply use shredded coconut. In one corner of the cake, use marshmallows, cut in various sizes, to create a snowman. You can use pieces of gumdrops to create a nose and hat for the snowman. Chocolate frosting can also be used to create eyes, buttons, and a mouth. On the other side of the cake, create a small forest of Christmas trees simply by using sugar cones. Turn the cones upside down and frost with icing that has been colored green. Immediately place the cones on the cake and dust with powdered sugar to look like more snow. If you want, you can also use red M&Ms to create ornaments on the Christmas trees. To create a path through this winter wonderland, you can use brown M&Ms or crushed Oreos.

Christmas Cake Ideas: Christmas Ornament Theme

A super simply Christmas cake is a Christmas ornament cake. For this theme, you will need two round cake layers (the flavor does not matter), vanilla frosting, food coloring, and Milky Ways or Snickers. This cake can be decorated anyway you want to. For example, color a large portion of the frosting with red food coloring. Frost the entire cake in the red frosting. Immediately press two regular sizes candy bars against the cake vertically and frost them as well with white frosting. This will create the top of the ornament. Then use the rest of the white frosting to create a beautiful design on the Christmas ornament, such as snowflakes. You can also add more candy to create decorations if you like.

Christmas Cake Ideas: Christmas Tree Theme

Christmas cakes can be easy or really easy. This Christmas cake just happens to fall into the easy category. The first thing you need to do is melt milk chocolate and dip some pretzel rods into it. Allow these to harden while you move onto the next step. Take a chocolate sheet cake and cut out large triangles. Once cut, use an apple corer to remove a small section at the base of each Christmas tree. Then insert the pretzel rod, a.k.a. tree trunk. Frost the Christmas trees with vanilla frosting that has been colored green. Then use M&Ms, Skittles, or even Red Hots to create ornaments. You can even do mini versions of these Christmas cakes and use them as place cards for your guests.

Christmas Cake Ideas: Santa's North Pole Theme

One last idea is a North Pole themed cake. This is so cute and so much fun to make. You will need a sheet cake (the flavor does not matter), vanilla frosting, shredded coconut, graham crackers, gumdrops, M&Ms, Toasted Marshmallow Jelly Belly Beans, a foil wrapped chocolate Santa, a strawberry Fruit Rollup, and pieces of red or green bubble gum. First, use the graham crackers, some of the frosting, M&Ms, and the gumdrops to create a small house. This will serve as Santa's home. Next, frost the cake and sprinkle liberally with the coconut. In one corner of the cake, place Santa's house at a diagonal. Be sure to press the house down into the cake or it may fall over. Next use the jelly beans to create a path from one corner of the cake to the other (horizontally). On the other end put the foil wrapped Santa. Cut the pieces of bubble gum into small squares and place them into the middle of the Fruit Rollup. Cut a thin strip from the Fruit Rollup's longest side and then bunch the Fruit Rollup around the pieces of gum. Tie the bag with the strip you just cut. Place the bag on its side, next to Santa and place more pieces of gum around the bag. This looks like Santa just got home and is so tired he just dropped the bag of presents by his side.
