Tips on Staying Organized at Christmas

Being a parent is never an easy task, and there are few times prior to adolescence when parenting can be more demanding than at Christmastime. Christmas requires a lot from parents until the big payoff of Christmas morning happiness is received, so it is necessary to approach the holidays with a firm grasp of everything needed to get through the season.

One of the easiest ways to stay organized at Christmas is with a checklist and preferably a small calendar to pencil in important days and celebrations as the time approaches. Here are some suggestions about events to add to a Parent's Christmas Checklist and the little things that help the big items get checked off.

The biggest thing on a parent's mind when the holidays roll around is how and when and what to acquire Christmas gifts for the little children. Sit down with a pad and pencil to make a present checklist and take note of how much there is to spend per child. For each child choose one pricier gift (around 50% of the child's budget) and automatically deduct that from their total. Use the rest to add quantity to their Christmas. It is best to plot all of this out before going shopping to avoid temptation and impulse purchases. A checklist will help holiday costs stay in hand.

Also use a checklist/calendar to keep a firm grasp on family requirements during the holidays. If the children are all in school and both parents work, a checklist of preparations is necessary. Extra groceries will be needed, as will a baby-sitter for the daytime. In the evening family holiday activities can be planned out.

Any holiday checklist will undoubtedly feature a lengthy list of activities and tasks such as making out family Christmas cards, taking a Christmas portrait, visiting a few relatives, and going out to local attractions. When there is a free evening at home during a school break, load up the family and head out one activity at a time instead of getting into a mad rush of necessities and engagements as Christmas approaches.

The best thing to remember when organizing a checklist is not to let a checklist rule. Sometimes situations change and the need to be flexible arises. When an unforeseen circumstance pops up, take care of it, and then reassess the Christmas lists and shuffle tasks as necessary. Don't forget to take a moment amidst the chaos that the holidays can bring and breathe, center, and reconnect with family and friends.
